My year old Eberspacher has just started smoking.

Having given the boat a pretty hard run this weekend I looked foreward to a bit of heat once back in the mooring. No heat and just diesely smelling fumes from the unit. The thing is still under warranty but wondered if this is a big problem or may it settle down and sort itself out.

Also my beloved bowthruster seems to have packed up since last trip although the control lights up. Any ideas please on this one too ?

Thanks

Nick

Disgraceful allowing a year old to smoke! I'll report you to the NSPCE /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Are you sure that it was getting sufficient battery power, sounds like it isn't actually firing, going thru the start and shutdown cycles without the glow plug doing its job.

Could be the same problem for the thruster, lack of power.

need more symptoms

Same thoughts as LJS. Is your voltage down?

On the bowthruster:
1. Is nuthin happenin at all? No relay click means relay is bust/volts down/ bust thermal cut out
2. Is the relay clicking on the bowthruster but motor not running? Oooer, could be bust motor
3. Is motor running but no thrust? = shearpin

I had the same problem a couple of months ago. In the same day B/T packed in and so did the heating. B/T turned out be be a shear pin broke, this was fixed in cowes by an engineer. Heating turned out to be a control unit in the Eberspacher heater. The eberspacher was just 12 months old, but 2 weeks before, I had booked it in for an annual service (cost £78) - because in doing so you get an additional years Warrantee. Dealer came out within a couple of days, completed the service and replaced the faulty part under the warrantee.

Mine is exactly the same story and my first service is booked for next week or so - very strange...

As far as thruster is concerned I could not hear any noticable clicks - just silence and no thrust.

Could it be the result of getting a rough ride?

Thanks all

Nick

agree with RDL if both gone then may be electric or relay somewhere, if BT clicking then look at fuse, will be 80A somewhere, if that fails may need to look at getting thing rewound or replace....

Tip from Eberwhatsit mechanic. Run it off parafin for a while. All clean after. Not to discount low batteries as others have said.

Well, you should not have. But smoking can be caused by many things. Try cleaning yer glow plug if batteries are ok. Have you not got a guage wot checks them??

You didnt have that central switch on again did you?

ie the Split Charge Diode between the port battery and starboard battery switch.

That could be causing battery volt drop.

I take it you checked for B.T cicuit breaker / B.T Battery terminal / Isolater?
Not sure about Erby. Did the smoke not clear?

As I said, I will happily come down for a look.
Thanks again for the W/E.

This is amazing! My Ebersbacher did exactly the same last Saturday, 1 week outside its first year from delivery of the Boat?? However the warranty started 5-6 weeks before when it was actually fitted to the boat, not when I took delivery, so I'm stuffed it seems. Even has my name on the guarantee form as I ordered the boat with heating fitted, however guarantee starts from day of Fit, not delivery to me.

Turned out to be an absolutely filthy glow plug in the end so no major expense, so far! Haven't tried it since ao unsure if totally fixed, will update. Paul

i have just spoken to the heating service man who is going down Thursday to do routine service who reckons that water may have got up the exhaust and ruined the heat exchanger etc....

Could this be the case and would it be an insurable item?

To be fair the chap said that it may also be fixable but I will have to wait and see....

Any comments please?

Theres nothing unusual about Eberwatsits breaking down or smoking. MF's does it all the time. I've spent that much on mine, I could have bought three new ones. Even went to court with one engineering Git!!

Heat exchanger is stainless steel! Can't see that being hurt by a bit of water
