Capn,

not much I can say to that except sorry to hear it and for your loss - I expect YBW will have more details in a while, but I know what it is to lose a friend, and to go American ' it sucks '.

Thanks all.

Best guess it was a propane gas explosion. Will probably never know.

His girlfriend had, in fact, flown home to Norway.

A nearby dive boat saw the flames and went to assist. They found him already dead face down in the water with a lifejacket on (odd that it was face down??) with bad injuries. Nearby grab bag contents identified him. The dive boat had a few kids on board, a diver rather selflessly stayed in the water with the body to spare traumatising the kids until another boat arrived.

He was nails. Many tides ago he joined me in the Canaries for a trip across to Antigua. During a heavy and prolonged rainstorm, he decided to stay on watch rather than any other crew get wet too. All he asked for was some soap. Got his kit off and had a dhobey. Surprised the girls on board. Top bloke.

RIP John.

I have found most ' media reporting ' is diabolically off the mark when one knows anything about the subject involved; probably a result of ' a degree in Media ' seeming like a spiffing idea to clueless students who have no life experience let alone ' common ' sense and wouldn't know a yacht from a square rigger !

Edit; Capn'sensible, I hope you get to say or write something for John; don't take it for granted someone else will, I happened to speak at my chum Charlie Solleys' funeral more or less on the spur of the moment, but it was only days afterwards that he got well deserved plaudits internationally...

That is the worse bit of reporting I have read in a long time

I'm no fan of the Hate Mail, but I can't see too much wrong with the article. It's largely reportage. The headline is typically over sensationalised, but that's the subs, not the reporters. The reporters relate what the local police are saying, what the family have said in the Norwegian press, and get a response from his daughter. The article isn't claiming there's anything suspect, just that the local police think there might be. It then talks to other sources to indicate that the local police could well have it wrong.

Yes, CapnS, do put all your memories of him down, a good man deserves to be remembered, his deeds too often pass with him un remembered. The sea bath incident is a snapshot of his personality; selfless and practical, quick thinking too, with no water maker on board. A Right Seaman.
Also, if Norge memorial services/ wakes are like Swedish ones, you can stand up in your turn, and share your happy memories of him with his Family and other Friends. It will help you and help others reconcile to his sudden death.
Keep his memory bright.

Sympathies to the Capn on the death of his friend.

I have. Still can't see you problem with it.
What is your take on this bit, then?
The murder comes just two months after retired management consultant Roger Pratt, 62, was murdered and his wife Margaret, 60, injured when robbers attacked their yacht as it lay moored off the Caribbean island of St Lucia.

The article goes through the various possibilities, then ends by declaring Mr Garner's death as a murder!
