Is it a normal thing to only unstep the mast when afloat? Or is their crane not tall enough to do it onshore?

I'd have thought that was a fairly common problem. My fin keeled yacht draws 2.1m. Air draft is 17.65m and mast length is 16.0m - so I deduce that waterline to mast step is 1.65m. So, when out of the water, the base of the mast is at least 3.75m above the ground, and the top of it is almost 20m off the ground.

I have only had my mast stepped/unstepped twice and I wasn't around to see them do it, but I'm pretty sure it is always done with the boat in the water. Certainly, whenever I have watched them removing masts - I can see the crane when I sit in my cockpit - that is how it is done.

Yes please- keep the story coming macanderson!

All sounds good. If I happen to be near BSM at the launch/mast step I'll grab you picture or two, if you keep us informed of progress on here

As the boat is currently OOW, you could consider installing 2x seacocks for airco now. Then if you did decide to fit it, you wouldn't need to pay for a lift out and hardstanding, which is always the most expensive thing in SofF. Having the seacocks in place would reduce the cost of a one-unit airco installation to something like £1500: about 1000 for a single 16k btu/hr unit that could do the main cabin or the saloon (with a diverter flap to send chilled air one way or t'other), and 500 for the sea water pump, vents, air duct, and odds n ends. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dometic-M...tEquipment_Accessories_SM&hash=item3cd44b7c7b

Obviously you'd need to plan the whole install now, to get the seacocks in the right place, and if you decided you didn't want airco you'd have 2 redundant seacocks, so there are two sides to every coin. Also, you could just fit one seacock now rather than two, if you're happy for the seawater discharge to be above w/line, but that makes for a noisy set up in a marina...

Anyway, just a thought.

I hope the rest of the project goes well. A bit randomly I have posted some pics below to whet your appetite a bit further. First two pics are Villefranche, a mile or so from your new berth. Next 3 are all taken in the bay right outside your new marina, ie 1/4mile from your new berth. Last 2 are the anchorage on W side of Lavezzi at bottom of Corsica - a place to put on your cruising list (160nm from BSM). Apols that some pics contain motorboats but down there we don't make any distinction - boats are boats

My friend who has a boat on a leased berth in Port de Borme has his boat lifted ashore for the month of July, his berth is sublet to visitors during that time at a much higher rate than he has to pay for the (expensive) storage ashore in the yard where he does his annual maintenance.

I am 330 miles south of Edinburgh and my boat goes back into the water tomorrow. Next time, but I like your thinking. I will let you know when we are due to arrive in BSM.

JFM - if you know the bay then you will know this hotel. Where we stay.

This post I thought I would dedicate to resources.

The website of the marina I have already posted, and through bad french, google translate and some guess work we figured out the answers to the questions we had. We found this invaluable.

The guide mediterranee has been great for rough planning and dreaming found here - http://www.guidemediterranee.com/spip.php?article382&lang=en

UShip Enav has also been very handy for starting to look at various options for out planned two week get aways. Link here http://www.uship-enav.fr/?utm_source=uship.fr&utm_medium=Bannière&utm_campaign=LieneNav

However the best has been the Rod Heikkel Med and Corsica guide as well well as a plan old chart. there is something about look at a chart and getting the fine detail I find amusing and a great way to pass time.

Flights are now booked through a combination of BA and Easyjet. Easyjet offer a very good service from Edinburgh which works perfect for long weekends and week breaks. I can get to LHR very easily and so thats my starting point. Also with a few Avious points I have managed to get 5 return Club Europe flights for some of our trips. In all a success and so rather than flying to Edinburgh every weekend we will meet in Beaulieu Sur Mer.

For those not aware of the SoF transport links - there is an excellent train service not too far form the airport and it stops close to every major marina along the coast from Frejus to Menton.

Of course no planning occurs without reverting to the YBW forums and just asking. I have had some great advice from here and it has certainly helped.

To top things off the article on the Nice to Menton coast in the latest MBM was the icing on the cake. Talk about perfect timing!

So from our years of visiting for one week snap-shots and the above we are convinced we have made the right move.

This weekend I will finish off the holding tank wiring and the final load of clothes and other stuff we will out on board. A week Monday she will be loaded and on her way.

No worries, we are a resourceful mob in SofF. Plenty of engineers and we like a challenge. Bring your boat to Antibes, lash it alongside mine, winch the mast over so yours is heeling 30degrees, then drill the seacocks from a tender. Mine is 60 tonnes so it ain't gonna move much. Allow glue to dry 3 hours (it's warm down there) while the assembled mob have a beer and sandwich. Post pictures on here for entertainment value. Job done :)

Congratulations:)

The place is so beautiful that I thought of passing there when coming from the Eastern Med to the Atlantic but at about 200 euros a day for a 12.5m boat I guess that I will have to pass it:(
