Well after some consideration I thought I would start a thread on our move to the South of France(SoF). I have run a couple of threads on various issues, but things have fallen into place and this might well be helpful for others who are considering/thinking or just for a read. I will kick off with the process of getting a berth and the prep so far, and then if there is any interest I will follow through with the physical move of our boat.

The background-

For the past 7 or so years we have had an annual holiday between St Tropez and Beaulieu Sur Mer. We love the area and once we leave start planning on our next holiday back in area. For the past 5 years we have stayed in In a great hotel in St Jean Cap Ferrat and fallen more and more for the coast. By coincidence we bough our Beneteau 323 in 2008 and have had her in Edinburgh, but always dreamed of having her in France as a precursor to perhaps buying a property in the area with an eye on retirement. Retirement is more than 10 years away, but you have to start somewhere.

Four years ago I put our names down on both the Beaulieu Sur Mer and Villefrance Sur Mer marinas. For both we were told that the waiting list was around the 10 year mark. Every year I would go back to the port office and say hello and see if we had moved up the list. Results were never overly promising, but it was generally combined with a long lunch in a local restaurant, some wine and more dreaming.

I always keep a weather eye on berths for sale and was often tempted. However the reality of paying off the mortgage was always a bigger priority. I was also concerned about the lengths of leases left, 4 years for Beaulieu Sur Mer and 7 for St Jean Cap Ferrat as at 2014. So we waited.

Late in 2013 we were offered a berth for the winter, this was of no value. I cautiously asked if there was any chance of an annual berth. The response was not positive, so back to waiting. Two weeks before Christmas I got an email offering an annual berth! We had a week to make up our minds!! After an extraordinary financial committee meeting of the family financial coordination group (me, my wife and our Westie) we decided to go for it! Slight panic now set in as we need to get our boat ready for the move and away from our present marina by 1 Apr 14 as our contract was due at that stage.

Let me know if you would like part 2 - the preparation for the move.

Do crack on.

I sometimes lurk on the Mobo forum and wonder at the entertaining threads there along those sort of lines.
It would be great to have a few more sagas like that here which I could better relate to.

Don't forget the piccies!

Keep us informed. I like the idea of having the Westie on the finance committee, a couple of dog biscuits should get the decisions going your way every time!

Have co-opted my Labrador pup onto our committee. Agree to anything for the promise of a walk (going out now) and a biscuit at the end!

I'm not sure you have fully thought this move through. First, have you told your dug that is either going to be abandoned in kennels or be subjected to the travails of travel across le Continent? Then there is going to be the shock of seeing the bottom, rocks, fish, even your anchor rather than the comforting opacity of the Forth; unremitting sunshine and temperatures above 20C will damage your skin and cause UV damage to your Bendytoy and sails; only a choice of left or right when you leave the marina unlike the Forth where such weighty decisions are simple - turning right being the only sane way from Granton. I reckon you will be back within 3 months!

I purchased my retirement home in France more than twenty years ago at the age of 33! :)

Oh well here are some photos-

In order: present location. A key member of the financial committee with lunch! The local smaller basin with fish market. Looking back from Cap Ferrat to Beaulieu Sur Mer.

Additionally here is a link to a video of the marina : http://www.portdebeaulieu.com/videos/2611016-port-de-beaulieu

Step 2 - The preparation and costs so far.

From the outset we knew that we would need to modify our boat for the move, but we had to set priorities and will add once we arrive. Luckily we were already out of the water when the offer of a berth came through. This sparked the need to antifoul at the soonest opportunity and for this we had to hope for a weather window. February and good weather not being the best best I booked a week off and hoped. Last week I got my weather window and can confirm that antifouling is now complete.

We needed a holding tank. A simple process I thought as I would get the local Beneteau agent to fit one as they would know exactly what to do. For the quote of 2800 Euro I hope they did as this was enough for me to think that I could do this myself. Luckily I had the space in the cockpit locker, some of the deck fittings and some great assistance from fellow YBW forum members. I decided to stick to a close match for the original fit and so have a Vetus 88 l tank, but with a Whale macerator pump. Fitting the tank saw me use a new and varied series of swear words as often I would pray for the deliverance of a well trained small and very strong monkey who could reach impossible places. Unfortunately my monkey prayers went unanswered and I persevered. What appeared to be simple job took over a day. Typical. Total cost for tank fittings and pump is probably just under £500. A result.

Transport - I started in the run up for Christmas looking for a company that came recommended and wasn't going to charge the earth. I got quotes from £3500 to £6500 with varying degrees of commitment to the dates I was looking at. Also quiet a few companies didn't want to deliver to Beaulieu Sur Mer, but to Antibes. This would be an additional cost of E400 as I can't get away from work for the delivery and so would need to have my boat delivered the final 14 miles by sea. Eventually another forum member gave me a very good steer on a company and I have gone for them. We have the dates I want, delivered to Beaulieu Sur Mer and at a good price for all involved. Once we have the boat delivered I will pass details on PM for anyone looking for a recommendation.

Running Rigging - As we would be moving to a new location I decided to renew our running rigging. This was cheaper tun I thought and we came in at under £100 for main, jib and spinnaker halyards, new main sheet and jib sheets. This I cheated on and use a contact for mates rates. Still, smiles all round.

Interior - We haven't done much and are waiting to see if we need air-conditioning. Having spend considerable time in the tropics we are both use to hot nights and only sleeping with sheets whilst on boats. Mind you we are older now and do love comfort. We have moved our summer clothes aboard and will upgrade the champagne bucket for a better model!

Marina cost - Now this will be of more interest to some. For our berth we are paying E4740.50 from date of delivery to 31 Dec. This is for a 8-9.99m berth. Here is a link for those who would like to cost up their boats - http://www.portdebeaulieu.com/infos-pratiques/tarifs.

What has still to be done. This week our boat goes back into the water as our present marina won't take the mast down with the boat ashore. Will be done on Thursday and the lift in and mast removal cost has yet to be finalised as there are a couple of variables. I will report back.

More?
