Moving to the Med

Whereabouts?

We did it a year ago and it's worked out more expensive than I thought it would, Main reason was we loved it so much we ended up buying a bigger boat :-)

It's worth digging out Jimmy the builders thread on moving to the med if you can find it.
 
thinking of denia, easy striking distance for a number of places.

Must you have a holding tank on board, not sure if this is mandatory or not?

As has been said Jimmy The Builder posted a thread on here and in fact wrote an article covering just the topic in last months Motor Boat & Yachting magazine (I think it was last months).

Hurricane has a boat moored in Sant Carles de la Ràpita Spain. I think he's very happy there and it's probably a bit cheaper than the South of France. He would be a good person to chat to.

JFM is on the board of Trade & Commerce for Antibes & the surrounding areas. He gets thirty Euros for everyone who move there :)

Finally BartW is in Toulon which is a more cost effective place to keep a boat in Southern France as I understand it.

There is a wealth of knowledge covering the subject on here so definitely the right place to post your question. Obviously the Bank / School Holiday may delay things a bit.

For my part I can give advice on Gosport-Sur-Mare a more Northerly Mediterranean option :)

We spent 1 season in Denia and to be honest it wasn't one of my favourite Med boating locations. Nothing wrong with the marina which is excellent nor the town which is quite lively in season. However, its about 1 1/2 - 2hrs drive from either Alicante or Valencia airports which is a pain after you've done it a few times. Then the cruising area is quite limited IMHO. If you turn left out of the harbour, the coastline is quite featureless and if you turn right, there are a few anchorages but most are untenable in an onshore wind which brings me to my next point. I swear that the Denia area has it's own microclimate. It seems to be windier and wetter than other areas and certainly, the afternoon onshore sea breezes are very strong. Whenever we had the opportunity, we cruised the 70 odd nautical miles to Ibiza and the Balearics and eventually we went to Majorca with a plan to stay a week but ended up staying 5yrs. We found Palma to be a much more convenient boating location than Denia with many marinas only a short taxi ride from the airport and the range of cruising possibilities is far wider than Denia.
As for a holding tank, yes there probably are regulations requiring holding tanks in most Med countries but whether there are or not, would you want your kids swimming in anchorages where there are boats discharging sewage into the water? I'm guessing you wouldn't so fit a holding tank

We are out here right now - Easter weekend - very cold at home I believe - bit windy in Spain at the moment but SWMBO has been sun bathing this afternoon - we had to be careful she didn't get burned
 
Thanks for the feedback, what are the cost of mooring in Palma compaired to Denia? if you dont mind me asking? We have a sealine S28 so not a big boat lol.

Sorry I can't tell you what current rates are. At the time we moved from Denia to Club de Mar in Palma http://www.clubdemar-mallorca.com, there wasn't a huge difference in mooring costs. However, the recession may have changed relative rates. Give Club de Mar a call and ask what their current rate would be for a 8m or 10m berth. My guess would be around €8k per year
 
its the marina de Denia that we are thinking of, go to take a look in 2 weeks time, visit a couple before i/if we take the plunge.
 
I've just spent the last two hours reading through all jimmythebuilders threads from early in 2012 when he moved his boat to sof..........definately worth reading, very eye opening! Moving a boat to the med certainly has its ups and downs.
 
I went to benalmadena two years ago, best thing i,ve done, 15mins from malaga, easy cheap flights from anywere with ryan, cracking marina,and there are some berths available, i,ve bought mine ,like it that much, just do it
 
I moved to torrevieja 3years ago, it was really easy and so far cheaper than northern uk marinas, let alone south coast uk
Easy to get berths on costa blanca at present as Spain is struggling
Denia is nice but as others have said quite a drive and cruising more limited for short trips
And yes get a holding tank you won't be popular without one

Sharon chose to wear a hat most of the weekend presumably to keep the sun off her head. I didn't see her on the foredeck airing the Bikini though so I might be mistaken. :)

I can confirm reverse cycle air conditioning reverses !

Is it the 6 months of non-stop sunshine in the summer months, the cheap beer or the topless women that makes you say that? :)
