Re: Define your terms

The engine revs required are surely a function not just of RPM but also of pitch. As the Maxprop self pitches it will 'select' the required pitch to match the speed of the hull through the water. This relates directly to the one negative feature of such props which is that one is prone to getting restricted thrust at zero speed as the propeller would 'prefer' to have zero pitch (in fact there are mechanical limits) - this effect requires you to use more revs to get away from a berth than you would initially assume.

Forgetting all the techies out there who like to justify their methods with reams of explanations.

If I want to Motorsail to stop the Wife complaining about the length of the passage time then I will.

Getting irate about the comparatively minor difficulties of working out who has right of way, is insignificant compared to the other misdemeanors commited every time you poke your nose out of harbour, particularly in the Solent.

There are more important things to get wound up about. I don't know about you but I go sailing to relax.

Chill out a little!

regards

Martin

I enjoyed Sunday mornings passage from Cowes to Hamble with just the head sail. Very strong winds and an average speed of 8 knots. Excellent, why anyone would need the engine is beyond me. Also how can you tell, the sea state made it virtually impossible to see if an engine was running. In any event I kept my engine running for 30 mins or so to charge the batteries after a night at the Folly. Is this motor sailing!

When sailing offwind (as opposed to sailing to windward) my motorsailor sails best with the main down and the headsail up. This tends to make the boat sail more smoothly, gusts do not see her trying to turn up into the wind and generally this is a most comfortable way of making progress. Naturally if there is sufficiient wind we dispense with the engine, if not then ticking over at 1200 rpm gives us a pleasant turn of speed.
Don't attempt to call me a prat - and if you do at least spell it properly.

Re: Terms Defined

its quite clear - when motorsailing you should show the cone. there is no rule about which sails you can use when motorsailing and some boats (my own Prout for example) have rigs which make the genoa the best sail to use, not the main.
the tack for collision reg purposes is decide by the position of the boom, so if no mainsail is in use, i dont know how you can say a boat is on one tack or another. anyone know the answer?

Re: Terms Defined

I'm probably wrong, but I have always been under the impression that which tack you were on was defined by which side of the boat the wind came from.

Re: Terms Defined

Quite right . . .

As I have said in previous posts, there are occasions when headsail + motor is an entirely appropriate combination.

However - nobody has yet explained how you can display a motorsailing cone in the prescribed location with the headsail up.

Re: Terms Defined

Does it matter what tack you are on if you're motorsailing? If motorsailing you are a motor vessel, so it doesn't matter surely? I always use a motor sailing cone, I'm a motor sailor, so its almost always rigged, in fact I'm still waitin g for somebody to tell me where I can get one of those umbrella type ones I can leave rigged and open from deck. If somebody can't see your cone, it still doesn't matter, as long as you behave as a motor boat.
