It is interesting to see with which different motives people sail away. Most are marvelous prepared for the sea, still they often underestimate all in all needs. There are many single hand sailors who for any reason could not find or don’t want a partner, very frequent are couples, bigger groups are rare. Most sailors have a fix plan and destination, surprisingly there are many drop-outs from society, who live on the boat. Additional there exist too many tramps, who somehow managed to pick up a boat. They struggle true habitual manner as parasite or worse as thiefs and smugglers. Thank to this kind is that in Pacific ocean yachts are almost nowhere welcome.
For me admirable are sea gipsy which prepared them well. Mostly this are couples which build well equipped sailing boats and living from pension or savings. This group organized them self, one info net was build, they stay daily in contact. Everything what is important to them get exchanged true radio, from travel plans and upcoming bad weather up to authority harassment. By this strike me that groups organize by speech they belong to. There exist German, Spanish, English and French net. Despite organizing they often get attacked by robbers and thief, these have also radios and know true listening about their plans. One armed robber is there as a fox in a chicken coop. End of January 1996 we was underway along the coast of Venezuela direction Panama as 3 yachts sailing in convoy close to land were robbed from 4 armed man in one motor boat. One of the yachts called long while for help, but didn’t get answer from coast guard or police. We was 100 miles down wind already and would need at least 12 hours to intervene, so we continued sailing.
Between world sailors exist admirable exceptions, who set their needs so low that they maintain the boat with couple of dollars for shells included good living. All Spartans first class who has the courage visiting islands where others never go. But their philosophy to sail alone was opposite to my. I am sociable human being and I didn’t wanted to be alone on the boat for security and comfort reasons. I wanted to live on the ocean without consideration of weather or time of the year, visiting all islands and stay there should I like it. For this I needed before all things a boat which could take along enough supply and energy to stay independent away from land at least months or better years. On it should be space for at least 5 crew members, what put out 3 watches a 2 man, 8 hours a day. This make possible to make trips comfortable also then if one or several get sick or injured. And this boat should be large enough to take paying guests if I would need to earn money. It need years of experience on the sea and I build 3 rather not useful yachts until I get this knowledge, not to talk about money. To survive here outside without renunciation of luxury it need different knowledge and about this was nowhere to read about. Additional I had to earn small change and this was not simple except I would be pirate, drug or weapon smuggler. But this all is state or at least official business. A private man has without their support nothing to look for, in addition the other side outside the law never interested me. The problems to get good crew be added, also then if plenty money can buy the best ones. But so much money I never had. Despite, with few exemptions I had the whole time giant fun on this life, otherwise I would not be still included.
