Any one with a suggestion for a less than cripplingly expensive place near Naples where one could moor up with 10m over August?

For instance, whats Gaeta like?

Gaeta is probably your best bet - the marina is usually crowded and cannot be called cheap, but is well run and efficient.
One can anchor, but you need to be on the boat.

Your "best" bet is to make for Cediera (ignore Heikell's misinformation) and tie up on one of the non-existent-tuna-boat berths. That's without cost and quite safe - if you're going to leave the boat for any time, ask one of the lampara skippers to keep an eye on it for a time. I spent about 3 weeks there.
Cediera is close to Salerno, round the corner from the bay of Naples.
Berthing in Italy is scarce, expensive and rough and, especially on that part of the coast, is almost non-existent.

the safest and cheapest place to leave your boat if visiting Naples is the harbour (marina Grande I think they call it) Anchor in the middle, dinghy ashore, catch the ferry to Naples.
If you are wanting a visit to Pompei then Salerno is the best choice to anchor off and take a local bus. Have done both so not just blowing hot air here. Italians love small boats.
