generally speaking

is mooring insurance from April until October?

asking for a friend, I'm a marina dweller

I know it depends on insurance, but genarally speaking....

Check with the insurance company and what is on the policy.

I am insured to be on the water and in commission all year round, but I am at 50°N in Cornwall. It might be a bit different at 60°N in Lerwick,

It’s not even as simple as the lattitude - there are very sheltered spots which do have 12 month cover (at least with some insurers) and more exposed areas a few miles away which are 6 months only.

But to answer the OP’s point - yes if you are summer only cover usually it is 1 April to 1 Oct.

The type of mooring and location are the key factors.
On the S coast, on a swinging mooring in Portland Harbour you will only get Apr to Oct in water. Poole Harbour mainly A - O swinging but depends on location in PH and insurer. I'm on a Fore and Aft mooring on the river feeding PH and am insured for all year in the water, Mariner's in Poole and Portland will probably be the same as mine.
The above is probably also true for the Solent.

Fore and aft in Portsmouth harbour mine is 01/12 - 28/02 ashore. I asked for this because I wasn't certain about the dates that I could guarantee being out of water.
There was no difficulty getting it agreed.

From my experience it depends on what a particular ins co thinks of the safety of the mooring and location over winter. There is some general agreement between companies as to where it is ok over winter but there are many outliers who will insure where many will not. You just have to ask your and other insurers.

I was with Haven Knox Johnston and although I am generally marina based we have a swinging mooring on the West Coast. HKJ will only cover until end of August, this is stimulated by the underwriter MS Almin? So my solution was to change insurer to Visicover who are content for me to use said mooring until the end of October, and also considerably cheaper

I had 12 months in water insurance with N&G on a trot mooring up at Fareham.

We had 12 months comprehensive on our mooring in Portugal with Amlin via Y Yacht for quite a few years but on renewal 3 years ago, they decided they would only cover third party with no salvage or pollution, despite no claims. Now with N & G.
