Why use Monel rivets rather than stainless for fitting stuff to aluminium masts? Don't both types need to be seated in Duralac? If Monel is the way to go, what should I be paying for 10 x 1/4in x 1/2in rivets?

Monel rivets do not need Duralac, stainless ones do, only use Monel on alloy masts.

Monel is a copper nickel alloy. Its position in the galvanic series is close to stainless steel. When used in aluminium it will need Duralac, or an alternative, just as much as stainless steel does and for the same reason.

Looks lkie I may be wrong, found this thread from a few years ago!

I am sure in all my years at Sailspar we did not use Duralac, in the good old days we used to fit out 5 masts at a time, can't ever remember using anything on the rivets. I agree about stainless which is why stainless pop rivets should not be used. I remember rig checking many yachts that had a kicker fitting or gooseneck fitting made from stainless, little was put under the fitting and when removed all sorts of problems were going on with the alloy section!
I guess reading the thread probably best to use Duralac although I'm sure someone else will have another opinion!

It appears that Z Spars do not find it necessary to use Duralac as a matter of standard practice to separate Monel rivets and the particular alloy of aluminium used for their masts. This may be because,as has been said, there is not a constant electroyte present. It may also be because there is a contradiction in making the desirable close grip between the rivet and the mast section and introducing a slippery medium between the two as the rivet is compressed. The duralac is in any case likely to be expelled at the point of closest fit.Stainless fittings are another matter.
