Avon so soft was the favoured buy for years
but someone will have the eco friendly dish of the day to sell
stay well off shore in the evening?

I was wondering if they are known to spread diseases, or are just irritating? Do they bite like mosquitos?

Midge Magic is the one we use. Works pretty well. They aren't around in any numbers yet, but probably won't be long.

Avon Skin So Soft as mentioned above was the repellant of choice but I think they changed the formula and it is no longer effective. Smidge or just stay on the boat and drink.

Also pray for winds of F2 and above with temps below 10c and the darlings don't come out to play.

I have posted this before I suspect. In the days of my youth and active climbing my climbing partner and myself were in Skye camping at Glenbrittle where in those days at least sanitation and facilities were primitive to say the least. Phill when going to the toilets which were infested with midges ( so easy to write midgets ? ) used to take a copy of a newspaper ( he bought a new one at every opportunity and even begged them from strangers) I add that this was not to read and pass the time as that would have been unpleasant on so many levels but he would scrunch several sheets of newspaper, place them at the base of the door, light a fag ( hopefully Mountain will excuse the reference) and then light the paper. Occasionally he would feed the resulting conflagration with fresh newspaper. He said that this worked on two levels it removed the midges and no doubt any lurking midgets and masked the appalling smell making the short but necessary stay in the confines of the cubical bearable, just, if not comfortable.
So the best midge repellant is a newspaper, a fag and a match.

Thanks for the tips
I have never heard of them spreading any illness but they are intolerable when out.

Prevention is better than post nibble treatment!

The active ingredient in Stugeron Cinnarazine is actually a antihistamine which can be used to treat post nibble skin irritation.

There are many cream based remedies that use zinc paste as a carrier. Beware some people react badly to zinc paste on mozzy or midge bites and the results of using cream based antihistamines can be increased agony!

Stugeron combined with alcohol in small quantities is well known for inducing sleep.

My standard answer ……… a Rocna.

Midges don’t travel far from shore
Well, anecdotally, I'm beginning to think that the wee bu@@ers are learning to swim as it used to be about 10-20m off shore was ok but now you need to be further out.

Pipe smokers always used to be very popular.
