It's a 350 cid Chevrolet. Ford would be 5.8ltr / 351cid. Also, Chevy distributor is at the back, Ford is at the front
If you give me the casting no on the block near the distributor, I can confirm if it is a 5.7ltr/ 350 or a 5.0 ltr/ 305 as externally they are the same.
On the subject of petrol engines on boats, why is it that they are of such horrendously high cc and multi cylinder. Excuse me if I've missed something being a diesel owner.
Spose its power more thats needed yes?
I mean not many people have cars that are.. V8.. and over... 5 litre,
sept for Range Rover and large Jag owners. But the average car owner certainly would bulk at the thought of such a gas guzzler in their car.
I mean my car is only 4 cylinder, 2 litre and still cruises at 80-90 if needed. Please advise CGN

I think it's fair to say that Sterndrives tended to be developed from proven commercially available automotive engines, and as you say most are based on big yankee V-8's.
However the boating fraternity is only a small market, and the USA is the worlds greatest single market, My opinion is that boat manufacturers follow suit in engine choice when it comes to the build of recreational boats.
But in general now, new inboard engines tend to be diesel. Recent developments in lightweight turbodiesels, have made them as fast, and as powerful as larger and heavier petrols of traditional design; and as much as 50% less fuel hungry in some cases!

I'd guess it's power to weight ratio. Smoothness of acceleration and tourqe curve. It's also simplicity - if you want to get more power then you either need more cubic inches or more volumetric efficiency (turbo/blower).
There is also a school of thought that sez a v8 on tickover sounds nicer than a zingy 1.8 four pot girlie motor.
Clive- it's the sound they make. Luvly grooooowl rising to a roar, like from the muscle boats which have been practicing for something around here today. Makes a chnage from the sound of leaf blowers all week/forums/images/icons/smile.gif
