Meeting other forum members

Was that the Yarmouth visit as an alternative to the Cherbourg intended destination? Changed plans due to awful weather. We all dined in an Indian Restaurant (now long gone) above or close to the the old RNLI shed. One member from Poole was rescued by the RNLI because they ran out of fuel in rough sea in Poole Bay. One boat was too far committed off St Kat’s so carried on to Cherbourg in rough weather. The 2nd night was spent in Beaulieu river.

No - the Yarmouth one was actually organised by me with YBW for Yarmouth ... 28 May 2006

All those boats you see were part of it, except the Mobo in left background ... it was a big meet. We had at least 3 BBQ units fired up ... and later in evening we made it to the Pub in town ... had a whole section of the Pub put aside for us ...

But I was a 'member' not organiser for Cherbourg - but rough weather meant that boats like mine did not make it over.

There's nothing to stop you (or anyone else) organising something. Just make a suggestion in (probably) The Lounge, or some other forum if more appropriate (e.g. Mobos, or one of the area based forums - East Coast Forum, Bristol Channel Forum, Thames Forum).

In the past there have been various meet ups, varying from two or three people to quite a large crowd meeting in a pub, restaurant, yacht club, harbour or whatever. Refueler's one is an example, and people meeting up during the Boat Show in London when that was more popular is another.

The East Coast Forum used to have a meet up every year or three, typically at the end of the season (and known as the 'Laying Down Supper', and I think there was even sometimes a beginning of season 'Fitted Up Supper'😁) at a yacht club somewhere reasonably accessible for most those potentially coming (including tidal considerations for those arriving by boat), and an annual summer family friendly 'Pirate Weekend' in Walton Backwaters.

There used to be occasional boat meet ups, e.g. an annual Cherbourg Rally.

I think there are fewer on the forums these days, quite a few 'regulars' having retired from sailing or otherwise having, er, drifted off for whatever reason, and younger generations presumably are generally going elsewhere, so it may be a bit more difficult to generate enough interest, but it doesn't happen unless someone puts their head above the parapet, suggests something, and if enough takers organises it (think herding cats!).

Not forgetting the London pub meets followed by an Indian meal in Brick Lane.

I’ve met and made some great friends through this forum. I think it’s a great way to get together with like-minded individuals who share a common passion. WAG involvement has been 100% beneficial to this 😊 and has massively benefited my lovely wife in particular.

Do I not recall a few years back ybw tried to organize a forum social event. Despite several takers for a London venue some vocal northern forumites demanded that it not be London so the venue was set somewhere in the midlands…and no-one showed up?

Brick lane has changed a lot in the maybe 15 years since I attended one of those meet ups. I’d suggest we revisit that but I’m currently trying to keep under the load limit of my bosun’s chair…

That does ring a bell.

A quick trawl through the forum archives suggests the first curry outing was in 2010, sadly the photos in that thread are no longer visible. The last one I attended was in 2015. Have a feeling the pre-meet pub has since been demolished.

Meet other forum members? I have met so many. Some were berthed on the Medway, others I met on the last organised YBW meet that should have gone to Cherbourg, but went to East Cowes and the Folly Inn. When everyone went home I sailed overnight to Cherbourg and sailed the French coast back to the Medway. Then when Concerto was at the Southampton Boat Show and the 2 following shows came to say hello. Then whilst sailing round Britain I met plenty more forum members who wanted to come and have a chat in many different harbours. Over the past decade I have probably met a couple of hundred forum members.

I have one of those powerful iridium magnets…if I ever came across you…I would drop it into your pocket on the side with your tin hip…so you would forever only be able to walk in circles
That's very subtle. I thought I might be in line for a kick in the rocks.
