Meet \"Damarri\" !

First off I must thank Top Cat for his excellent explanation of how to get pictures in a posting..... and I hope this works!

About eight years ago I sold my old boat to start on THE retirement project. Ever since then most of the sailing I have done has been in books and on this bl***y computer. I bought a set of plans from Alan Pape, had the steel hull built by Richards Drydock in Great Yarmouth, shipped it by road down to my home in Sussex and for the last seven and a half years I have spent every spare moment fitting her out.....

We're nearly there!

She is very nearly finished and I expect to lift her out of here within the next couple of weeks. Then she will be taken by road to Eastbourne where I will add the ballast and a few other heavy bits, the mast will be stepped and then..... THE FLOAT TEST !

Sincere thanks to all who have answered my many questions over the years.... as you can now see, it was all in a good cause!

Paul.

Congratulations. But this deserves more than one picture - can't you put some up somewhere we can have a look?

That has to be the most beautiful steel hull I've seen on a boat this size, with no ugly hard chines. Can I ask the hull thickness? More pictures and an account please, and congratulations on a great project.

Very nice Paul! Well done. No one can describe the satisfaction of building the boat yourself and you can take pride in a job well done there. As a retired boatbuilder I appreciate seeing such a very fair and nice looking hull. It is simply decades since I last visited Richards Drydock. Nice to know they are still doing a good job. Have to ask. Did you need a lot of fairing compound to achieve the finish? Did you do the paint job yourself or sub contract? What paint system did you use?
Come on fess up? I know how difficult it is!

Re: Meet \"Damarri\" !

Thanks for your kind comments.... To answer a few of your questions, She 39ft on deck plus a short bowsprit, beam is 12ft 3" and draft is 6ft.
The hull is made of 4mm plate, the keel is 6mm plate and the superstructure, 3mm plate and there is not an ounce of filler on her! The guys at Richards did a really superb job.... The designed displacement is 14.4 Tonnes but that includes over 4 tonnes of ballast which will be added once she has been lifted out of here.

The paint system is Jotun from the steel upwards.... Jotamastic 87 Aluminium and Jotamastic 87 epoxies, then Jotun "Hardtop" two-pack polyurethane which was rolled on with foam mini-rollers. The silver stuff beneath the waterline is Jotun "Vinyguard" which goes straight onto the epoxy and acts as a tie-coat for the Antifouling.

There are a few more pics in Photobucket.....

Which tell the abbreviated story from the pile of steel plate to where we are now.

Has it been worth it? Yes, but I don't think I'd do it again..... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

But who did that interior fit out?

The teak posts were turned up professionally but otherwise "all on my own I dunnit"..... That's why it has taken 7 1/2 years! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

What a lovely yacht - you should be justly proud. You could sail her round the world - have you any plans for distant shores?

Hello
Never seen such a sleek steel hull, good luck to all who sail in her. Where does the name come from?

Congratulations Paul... Super Job!! very pleased for you and gratifying to know that there are other lunatics out there who are prepared to commit to a project of this nature....About a third of the way through a Van de Stadt Carribean 40...and about another 2 years to go! before I join you on the wet stuff.
