Getting really excited as it is only 2 1/2 weeks now until we finally get to see our first boat for the first time. Based in Split and seeing the thread on weather there last week reminded I'd better not rely on sun-bathing (or sailing - 7m waves - mmmmm!) to wile away the hours.

And so to fishing. In the past I have hooked any number of weird and exotic creatures while casually trolling behind the boat in the Med (and while trawling the bars on the seafront in the evenings - I wish!) and put them back because I hadn't a clue what to do with them (ditto). Have started to think that as I'm likely to have a bit more time on my hands I might take the fishing slightly more seriously, but be more discriminating and aim to catch only what we can eat. I wonder if anyone knows of a good guide to identifying/catching/cooking Med/Adriatic fish? Would be especially interested to know if anyone has any experience/knowledge of fly-fishing in the Med for edible species.

Finally, does anyone know whether it is possible to buy those disposable barbeques in Croatia?

Cheers for any help you can offer - I shall dedicate a bottle of fine Croation sauvignon blanc to the provider of the tip that hooks our first fish supper.

**aim to catch only what we can eat**

not exactly fly fishing:
I have often seen big game fishing boats coming into adriatic ports with several giant tuna, really giant animals: weight 200-250kg (yes 500lbs), more than a couple of meter long, in a moment of madness I tried to circle the body of the beast with my arms, and could not touch the fingers by more than 20-30cm

also blue sharks (prionace glauca) are quite common, I don't think they are edible, apart from fins maybe

in a marina, find someone who has just hooked a load of fish. Send small person round to ask if they want to sell some fish. Small person invariably arrives with fish and money waved away. Send back small person with approriate qtys of reasonable plonk, which wins even more fish.

Throwaway barbecues: seen them in Italy (Trieste) but not in Croatia.
Fly-fishing: at sea? Plenty of trout in the streams (try Slovenia for this: fabulous!)
Fish: you're likely to catch bream ('branzino') and 'orade' (dunno what this is in English). Between the rocks, there are little gunnies. Bear in mind that you will need a licence to go fishing. Don't know where you buy this but probably from the harbourmaster's office (or they will know where). I think that generally the fish near anchorages have become pretty astute concerning that tempting bit of bread...

Mmmmm - could be like the old mand and the sea - but I don't suppose there's anywhere strong enough on the Bavaria to lash my catch while the sharks eat it?

Hi Metabarca. Fly fishing in the sea is not quite so odd as it sounds - its quite popular in shallow waters in warmer climes lioke the Caribbean. Just asking because I have the tackle for that but thinking about it, casting a fly from a yacht with all that rigging abouty may not be such a bright idea. Maybe I'll plan an excursion to Slovenia.

use the tender to flyfish from (sitting down) works really well.
First light or dusk, off rocky headlands -
Catch Bass, mackerel as off the south coast.

Find rocky offshore reef (somehow) further off the better - as already said you need to get away from the amatur hordes. Stick a lump of squid or fish head on a hook and lower away - return the wrasse but keep the grouper.
Scabbard fish taste fantastic but look horriffic
Tuna (bonito) and blackfish when trolling lures

Perhaps a reefed tie and black suspenders. But don't start rummaging at the back of the drawers yet - I am possessed of a level of incompetence that even the best book may not be able to overcome.

Warning

It is a well-known fact that Mediterranean fish are only caught from 26 foot power sailers with movable liquid ballast. Unless you are about to acquire one of these exceptional craft, you will be wasting your time slinging your hook.
