Well I have to say - it is an odd thing in this country - Good Service -
MDL Ocean Village ran out of Gas - two hours later a bottle was delivered to the boat - the dockmaster had one brought down from another MDL marina.. I needed some photo copies - the paper was taken off me and the copies delivered to the boat 10 minutes later..

Thank you MDL - helpful staff that can't do enough, well done!

Hamble point - a really pleasant chap - nothing was too much trouble..

Northney lot - well, what can I say (kidding)

Northney - quite agree

you pay for a premium service and that's what you get. what a contrast to some marinas i've visited where you pay through the nose and get nothing in return.

......and just in case this leads to a discount, I have to say the Hythe Marina staff are great, (no really, it's true, there has been a very favourable and positive change in the past 18 months). Well done John Watson, your efforts seem to be paying off.

Now lets look at that pricing structure..........

Shamrock Quay, Peppermints home, the same. Can't do enough for you.
I arrived there the first time at 22:30hrs no one responding on VHF so I just picked a berth. 10 mins later a pleasant chap arrived, his VHF was US so a liveaboard mate of his was phoning him if he heard anyone calling. We where speedily found a permanent berth and given key cards and info pack.

I did quiz a few of the workers to see if they'd been on a course or had some service ethos training but they tell me not.

That been said I got a friendly greeting at West Cowes last time I was there so maybe it's universal.

Speaking of marinas. Is it just me that thinks E.Cowes marina hog the VHF a bit?
Sound like ATC quite often.

Marinas (Premier)

Whisper it ever so quietly, but we had excellent treatment from the home of the Sunsail hordes, Port Solent, over the winter.
Since Premier have taken over Southsea, which always was friendly if a touch tatty at the edges, I hope Humperdinck will soon feel able to give a good report there, too.

You do pay, though. Don't you.

Many thanks for this recognition of our excellent people...
We have a system that provides me with direct feedback from customers and I have to say that most of it, the vast majority in fact, has been very positive of late.
We don't get it all right, all of the time, but I can assure we we try hard,
Best wishes,
john

See what happens when you go away for a few days John?

Not only do you get a tan but come back to all this praise, I think it's because they(forum members) Haven't been afloat for 6 months and the fumes from the antifouling is getting to their brains a bit<s>.

I've talked and emailed with JW a few times in recent months after the Solent meet became based at Mercury.

One thing that came across very strongly was how passionately he believed in his on-site marina staff as helpful, friendly people.

Also how genuinely upset he was that past management practices (before he and his new management team came onboard) meant that those very same staff were bearing the brunt of customer criticism.

It's nice to see that his beliefs and current management are being born out in this thread.

He took a huge risk in putting his 'head above the parapet' on these forums, and took a great deal of stick for it, whilst gaining huge respect in the meantime, and I'm genuinely pleased he's finally receiving positive feedback.

I'd love to see other marine companies do the same

As Ali G would say. Respect.

The "Team Leader" sets the tone. Take the credit where is is due and don't underestimate your ability, John.

Hate to shower you in praise John, but I visited Shamrock Quay Saturday evening to claim one of my 'free' nights and they were just as friendly and helpful- even booking a restaurant for me and my wife.

Now, about the pontoon lengths in Northney...

Re: Marinas (Premier)

Yes, Southsea Marina has very friendly staff who seem to try very hard. I'm a little lost at the moment coming from a marina where I knew the staff and most of the locals, but I'm sure I'll be happy down here.

Service costs. That's all there is to it. I stayed at MDL Torquay one day last year and I was most impressed. If I had the money I'd use their marinas. That is not complaining about MDL, just acknowledging that you cannot have spotless loos, immaculate docks, and all of the other features and services for a discount.

... I do so wish holes in the water were cheaper though :(
