MDL Rumour on the river .

We have had our email from MDL confirming the sale has gone through. I usually get lifted there but after trying to get a date from then since January without success I finally gave up and was lifted at Noss yesterday. Friends are currently out at Dartside and said its not a happy place to be. whether its to do with the sale or something else but he said the staff are miserable and not very helpful. He was charged £20 for one days electric! Saw my engineer yesterday and he told me they have put contractors day fee upto £20 per person per day which has to be passed on to his customers....
The contractor fees are becoming a joke, I don’t pay several thousand pounds to moore my boat and then have to pay extra so I can have it maintained, i think these marinas need a wake up call as once they’ve bled us dry there will be a shortage of customers.

Are the marinas short of boats in your area ?
If not the bleeding will continue .
Spaces are starting to appear in most marinas now, if they think times will continue as in the last 2 years they’re in for a shock. I sold my boat a couple of years back as it was almost impossible to get visitor berths and I don’t stay at same place all the time, I will look for another boat if boating returns to be how it was.

I thought the same thing in the aftermath of 2008...I dreamt that the Capitainerie would phone me up and say we need your business we have a lovely place in the port reserved for you....
I think economists have a term ...inelastic ...demand doesn’t change no matter what happens

Are you sure or is it because they are out on the hard.

If you sold your boat two years ago, how do you know that 'spaces are starting to appear in most marinas now'?

I'd love it to be true, but I fear that it's just wishful thinking.

I made a berthing enquiry at mdl Torquay and Brixham back in January direct with the marina.
They took my details and said someone would be in touch from head office.
Still not heard back from them so they must still have more customers than spaces

Popped in to an MDL marina today to arrange our summer swing mooring - pontoon berths over- subscribed but happily plenty of swing moorings available for our day sailer.

I still boat with a few friends and am still in touch with brokers and marinas I previously used so can only say what I’m being told, it’s not the case everywhere but starting to show in some.
I certainly aim to buy again but not going to keep paying top money for take it or leave it attitude from marinas.

Don’t know what size you are but I’ve had a couple of emails from Torquay in the past two or three weeks urging me to take one of the “last few” 13m berths, and something from a Plymouth marina - can’t remember which but not Sutton Harbour - offering bertholders a reward for referring a friend - which sounds like they’ve got some berths to sell.

Torquay have certainly got some berths to fill as when I was there a few weeks ago was told a few had left due to the services dropping below a standard they considered acceptable for the price.
i would be looking at 12m + berths but don’t tend to stay anywhere permanently as I like to move around every couple of months, it’s more expensive but like the idea of regular change.

Who has it been sold to ?
Are there other site based companies that can do the work?
The standard mdl rate is £9.00 per day throughout the group .

I called in at Torquay marina office in January and enquired about the availability of a 13m berth and was told they had a health waiting list.
looks like a few must have left since

Its been sold to the Dolphin boat yard which is on the opposite side of the creek. The fee as I understand is payable by all contractors working on the site.

I didn’t follow it up - not sure why I got it as have never enquired about a berth there - but hopefully they and others are discovering that there is a limit to what even the ‘luxury’ sailing market will bear. Don’t suppose published prices will drop but maybe a pause in increases until they fall back into line.
