For a friend - got the boat last year and doesn't want to pay VP prices. Which is suitable? I use a mineral diesel oil as specified by Beta. Not sure about VP though.

I`ve never been able to get Shell Rimula tho. I understand it is ideal.
Eurocarparts sell Triple QX Mineral for £20.62 for 5 ltrs ( often discounts are available, especially to first time customers) The spec. is Volvo VDS-3, ACEA E7, API CI-4/SL and I use it in my MD2040.
It`s important not to pour in an oil with a newer spec. as modern engines can run at higher temperatures and use different metals than older ones. Vic Cox aka here as Vic S, has some very wise words on this Forum about doing just that and on his excellent website, coxeng.co.uk. ( Basically use a Mineral (not Synth!) oil as close a spec. to that which the manufacturers recommended at the time.

API CI-4 is a good modern oil spec. Now that sulfur levels in fuel have been reduced universally the TBN of lub oil has also been reduced. Last time I looked it was 8, a good figure for an intermittently used engine. Being newly developed it will also have a good additive package.
