Review of the 9F:

How to a model railway:
This is #170 in the series. You cannot beleive how much kit is needed for a digital set-up!

I wish I had started 10 years ago..... and could afford both a boat and the model railway.

You'd deprive those poor, cute little orcas of their sustenance? What cruel heartless thing you are!

Those struggling local businesses you'd be depriving of their living, too.

It's clearly your moral duty to get a boat!

(p.s. If you're still not persuaded, check out the railway modelling internet forums. )

Perhaps you could compromise, and build tiny radio controlled boats to play with in your bath? Or go the whole hog and build the marine equivalent of a track layout - shallow GRP tray featuring a couple of richly detailed little harbours, beach, anchorage, sand bar, some rocks, etc!

Nah! Don't be silly. Just get yourself a boat and stop messing about!

It doesn't matter if it's got narrow side-decks, isn't a witch to windward, or whatever other minor shortcoming. Even if you just use it to sit in your cockpit on its mooring, watching the waves and clouds going by while you contemplate the meaning of life, the universe and everything, or the latest maintenance conundrum.

Save your railway modelling for the winter months, or for when you're too old and doddery for going out on boats jousting on this forum.

When working full time I was challenged about the cost of owning a boat, the usual standing in the shower and tearing up £10 notes. Several colleagues were big football fans and I asked them how much they spent to see a match. The costs were quite astounding:
  • Season ticket
  • Away tickets
  • Train fares
  • Meals
  • Booze
Worked out they spent twice the amount I spent all for active participation of about 20 hours a year.

It felt that they were on a stand tearing up £10 notes. Each to their own.

Yep going to football is expensive, 1664626234523.png
That little lot at Arsenal?

£38!!!! All to watch over paid prima Donnas fall over a lot..

I have a a little day sailer at a sailing club, with moorings, a Seasons sailing, including club membership ( family). And use of the crane, £325... + Boat maintenance by me.. a can of coke or cupotea at the club £1, Bacon roll or sandwich £2...

My model railway club. Which has its own industrial unit, so you can use it, 365 days a year. A large range of power tools and manual tools , workbenches and tea bar, toilets etc £300 per year. Cup tea 30p

As for digital command control on a model railway. Yes it can cost hundreds. But I have circuit diagrams ( in some books I have) for controllers to be driven by an old PC that costs less than £20, . Controller chips for a loco shopping around you can get them for around £20...
You can also build an Arduino DCC controller for a few pounds and get the software off the net..

I don't use solenoids at £15-£20 per point. I use servos at £1.20, each controlled by a servo tester at £1.20 ea..

Thats an interesting set-up. Is this a new development? Everything says 'out of stock'
Not a customer atm, but looks like fun in the sun.
It started as a crowd funding project some years ago, but seems to be mainstream now with a few stockists. I bought one about three years ago as getting a proper sea kayak here would be expensive with shipping costs. Normally use it in the basic kayak form.
As you say, fun in the sun.

I had a couple of trips on my mate's Centaur this season. He spent most of June to September aboard.

He's retired, I'm not. I think if you're free to live aboard for whole summer months, it's definitely worth it.

But even after the fabulous summer we've had, and with cash to spend on a boat, it wouldn't be worth it for me.

As for traveling time, or living far from where the boat is, that can only diminish how worthwhile ownership feels.
