That's a reminder of how the arrival of MS Flight Simulator completely sabotaged my interest on model planes.
Why? The simulator offered what that models didn't?

Could be done any time, any weather, day or night, much like sailing, (apart from some limitations on the weather obviously), which came along soon after, and possibly also eclipsed the appeal of model aircraft. Why? The simulator offered what that models didn't?
Not sure about from a model perspective but I think MSFS becomes a thing in its own right, ie can end up being a hobby itself and could continue along side flying models or the real thing for that matter. I’ve heard that one gentlemen streamed videos of him using flight simulator and earned enough money to buy and fly his own private jet!Does a simulator offer a better experience than making (or at least, flying) a model?
Isn't it by design, an entirely more accessible (and very convincing) but intrinsically different, fake?
Someone's been to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, great shame they aren't allowed to stretch their legs out on the main line, they have the power to be allowed to do so, but changes to the design of points mean that 9Fs might derail.Better in the flesh!

Different but satisfying. Crashes cost nothing!Does a simulator offer a better experience than making (or at least, flying) a model?

ExcellentNow there's a thing, model railways, flight simulators, both of which are competing for my time at the mo. Well, I say flight simulator, but what I really meant was the one I had a go the other day at Andrewsfield near Stansted. A full cockpit of a 737 to professional standard which I flew from Stansted to Amsterdam. Brilliantly immersive experience but at £150/hour probably not a regular treat! (60th birthday present from Mrs H) Anyway, I can thoroughly recommend it. Pics below.
I have been using sailing down time to build a model railway in the garage, it is modular so it can be put out of the way when boat stuff or other jobs need doing in there - blurry pic below. I went for digital and sound . Why I went for a model railway having just retired from 40 years of building the real thing I do not know!

Is that with DCC and sound? The way Hornby are putting their prices up, I'd stick with the boat. Their new 9F loco is over £250, and doesn't even have a decent motor.
You have been faffing about trying to find reasons not to buy. So for you it is not worth you bothering. Find a different dream of something that you can achieve. Alternatively get of your rear end & buy a boat.Finding a boat ata reasonable price cost of maintenance and marina mooring, traveling time and attendant expenditure now bloody Orcas ready to bite ……is it worth the struggle?
GWR 47XX with headlight codes for express Goods? Now there's a thing, model railways, flight simulators, both of which are competing for my time at the mo.
