Out of interest, which AIS transceiver is that? The requirement that an AIS cannot transmit unless an MMSI has been entered is a licensing requirement so I'm surprised that any manufacturer has ignored it.

As I mentioned earlier - its not unusual for people to put a false number such as 1111111 etc. in to get round that ... why they want to do that beats me ... but they do.

If I had AIS on my boat - I would make sure my MMSI is in correct - then emergency services have info they need ...

That would be silly, especially if an MMSI reset costs money like in case of em-trac transmitters.

I understand that .... but Rappey said that he does not have to enter any number at all, which also suggests that he can change easily change it once he has entered it so the reset would not cost anything.

I can do that too in my emtrak in a few seconds. It accepts any name and mmsi. Maybe this is only possible in class B?

Go for it ... my posts stand as correct.

What you have done is not restrict private info by online option as with Youtube / Google etc.

You have gone direct to the site outside of the web app ...

I and no-one else said you COULD NOT do that ....

What I said is - you do not have that option INSIDE the web app ....

True. In fact many vessels do switch off approaching and in Pirate waters ....

Its a Catch22 situation .... they don't want to be 'seen' on AIS rcvrs by Pirates .. but Maritime Patrols would like the AIS to be on for identification and assistance.

On the subject of AIS, why do some people leave their AIS switched on and transmitting when the boat is safely tucked up in a marina?

A significant number that do this in our neck of the woods seem to be charter boats. I can understand why the owners might 'hard wire' the AIS tx to permanently on

That might depend on the manufacturer. VespaMarine just wanted a serial number when I discovered that the previous owner had transposed some figures and we were showing as a Swedish vessel.

Maybe not "infested", but at risk at the time: Trinidad to Grenada I switched off the AIS; I also switched off navigation lights and turned to the worldwide fishermen method of flashing a strobe for a few seconds every now and then. In case of danger one always has DSC, I guess oil rigs like Hibiscus keep a radio watch (?).
Apart from pirates, AIS being voluntarily switched off, or AIS messages sent with a "wrong" MMSI are common enough among fishing boats as to be cause of concern, in particular in the Mediterranean.
They may have their reasons, but surely no AIS does not mean no fishing boat.

Indeed, no AIS does necessarily mean no large vessels. Customs vessels and warship May not wish to advertise their presence.

Having been around on the briny for most of my life, I have no AIS or even radar and have no wish to know where everyone else is. I just keep a seamanlike visual lookout and somehow have managed to avoid a collision.

Just wish more folk looked out of their boat rather than watching screens.

Like me, you have complete control over your AIS information. In my case turning off "transmit" is (iirc) three clicks from the home screen, and takes about two seconds.

That is laudable. However, crossing the Channel with ships coming thick and fast, I find AIS to be invaluable. I can identify, easily and quickly those ships that might be of concern including those that we cannot see either because of visibility or because they are just too far away but doing 20 kts. I can get bearings on them and save using screenshots enabling me to monitor them. The bearings are far more accurate than a hand bearing compass. AIS is not a replacement for the Mk 1 eyeball nor for radar. Quite simply it is an invaluable tool that greatly improves safety at sea. I have around 40 years and over 50,000 miles. I go back to using RDF and Decca. I would not be without AIS.
PS. MarineTraffic is a free add on. You do not have to use it.

In reply to what ais I have, it's an onwa (possibly a furuno) .
It's built into a chart plotter and also has free maps for the whole world downloadable from their Web site (charts only work with onwa plotters).
The plotters also accept cmap and navionics

What you are saying is the same as using your car digital dongle (or even the plate) and build a site where i can track yiur movements and receive alerts when you leave home, etc.

TrafficMaster use only the middle characters of number plates for their tracking so they can't trace individual vehicles. However, you have to show numberplates. AIS is optional.
