It's not unreasonable to expect the monthly rate to apply to stays of longer than a month. Doesn't have to, of course. I don't stay long at marinas very often but for the couple of occasions recently when I have the weekly rate was extended pro-rata for stays of over a week.

I don't think it unreasonable to have to pay daily rates for daily stays - monthly rates are usually given on full months paid in advance. That's why you then have daily rates and weekly rates...

We've stayed in Sutton Harbour for the winter and had a similar issue when the 5 months was up, bad weather meant we needed to stay for a few more nights. We went straight on to the daily visitor rate. They certainly know how to lose friends and repeat custom.

Perhaps that's the case dahn sarf, but up here my experience is that you pay the daily rate, then the weekly rate pro-rata, then the monthly rate, pro-rata. I have on one occasion been charged a week for a stay of six nights , because it was cheaper.

Did you ask them to reduce the rate has you already been there a month ?
Some time you do have to push the point to get a discount ,
Some months back we wanted a haul out for a survey on a boat , the Marina wanted 100 euros for the surveyor to enter there yard , we refused to pay and told them we will go else where. They quickly knocked the fee on the head .
If we didn't say any thing we would had got charged .
Maybe if you was very nice about it and explain to the management ( not the girl at the dest ) that you felt some kind of a discount would be good for both you and the Marina it may turned out different .

I agree with the people who feel that the Marina was being short sighted and should had give them a discount .

This summer I visited Brighton Marina for 3½ days, arriving at 3.20 am. I was charged the full daily rate for 4 days, but when I left very early I spoke to the overnight security guard. He said he would have only charged the first part night as a short stay, but the general office decided otherwise. So perhaps there is no set rule, but what a member of staff thinks.

30 years ago I remember a magnificent old wooden C&N yacht berthed in Canpa's marina in Gosport. It had full covers over it and the staff regularly went aboard to pump the bilge out. The staff chuckled as the owner never visited and when he left it there he started on a weekly rate and it had been there for years - still paying the weekly rate!

I went into Largs last year and was pleasantly surprised that that they don't charge for non-overnight stays ... even though I arrived at about 3pm and left, as planned, at 11.40pm. I offered to pay and they refused, so I topped up the diesel before leaving in order that they got something out of me.

And another thumbs up for Scottish marinas - I got a free night without asking when storm bound in Girvan.

I was given a free night in Girvan, without asking, because I turned up at 5pm, exhausted after sailing solo from Kirkcudbright, 87 nm and 22 hours away. Stayed two nights, charged one.

To Vic - we booked in for a month saying we may stay a few days more but paid the month up front.
Elsewhere on this cruise (the first where we have stayed in away from home marinas for more than a few days) we have been given a day rate pro rata to the weekly rate without asking - twice.
I spoke to the berthing master (or some such title) where we are now and not a secretary.

When we arrived in Northern Ireland from Scotland at 5.30pm at Glenarm Marina, charges were waived as we were leaving 12 hours later. Many of my old pals in Scotland have now heard of this goodwill gesture.

To those who suggest that I should expect to pay the full daily rate because this is peak period and when marinas make their money - I spoke to this marina several months ago when planning the stopover to see how much notice would be required.
The answer was that they always have space so just call up a day or so in advance.

Had we known of this policy and had the strong winds not been forecast then we would certainly have left last week and they would have lost out by their policy.

The reason behind the OP was to establish if there is a standard policy and it seems that whilst there is not, others have experienced the same pro rata run on rate as I have elsewhere.

If we do the same next year I will look at alternative venues.

Thanks for the interest
Paul

We are talking about Plymouth Yacht Haven I presume.

You have been reading the blog!!

I have to say that they have done nothing underhand - if this is their policy I am disappointed, however they are following the rates published on their website.
Paying the £6 water ferry fee (return, for 2 of us) every time we want to go into Plymouth or a return bus fare to a supermarket doesn't help the cost for the medium term visitor without a car.
Other than that, the marina is sheltered, with good facilities and with sufficient wi-fi signal to enable us to stream iPlayer with an acceptable amount of buffering.
Next year we will try somewhere else though!

And - AntarcticPilot - I have used that offer several times when visiting a buddy to play at the Cowal golf club!

Holy Loch marina often have a Buy one Get one Free offer!

So have Carrickfergus. If you go there you'll see why. The people are pleasant enough, but the marina is like something out of 1974 East Germany and the town beyond makes the pictures of downtown Mogadishu look strangely appealing. Nice castle. though.
