What would you nominate as mankinds greatest invention (I would consider penicilin, for instance, as a discovery rather than an invention)?

I would nominate the bicycle as an relatively simple yet profound invention as it improves fundamentally upon mans physique by improving his efficincey; he can travel at four times the pace for the same effort and carry a payload.

Would have to be the wheel considering how much else flows from that and it's diverse uses. Would say fire but, after all, that's a discovery.

Could be the wheel, as that allowed carriage of weights, could even be the Infernal combustion engine, cause all transport has devoved from it,

But my vote goes to the invention of the printing press. Before that all books were handwritten and knowledge was rationed to just those withh power. The printing press brought education to the people, thus any new ideas were recorded, and the next person researching the same field could read the previous literature. Mankind's development can easily be traced back to this development.

Of course you could argue that the invention of writing itself is the catalyst for everything, but development was at a standstill for centuries until the printing press came along.

Well I suppose it is classed as a discovery...CPR! But then again any life saving inventions in my book are the most important. Artificial limbs too, they aided Sir Douglas Bader to fly again!

What is a " Rampant Rabbit" ?????????

Ah but the Bicycle incorporates both the axle AND the wheel so does that then contribute or compete with these very significant inventions?

I believe it's even better than a dolphin, but it's only what I've heard.

I have rabbits in my garden ( dont know wether they were rampant or not!) also met dolphins on my summer sailing and I would vote for the dolphins every time!

Am I being naive? :)))))

Would have to say the axle as the wheel is not much use without some sort of axle to mount it on.

You are describing the unicycle here. This gets my vote, as it is the obvious precurser to the bicycle.
