I want to make a trolley that can go on and off my old 4 wheel car trailer, carrying my runabout. The boat weighs 1.5 tons. Does anyone have plans or experience of making such a thing?

Here is a pic of my yard /launching Trolley it is for a 5 toner.
There is no reason you could not make it somewhat lighter using the front ends off an "older" car with full axles and a light section RSJ or column.
Fix the wheels on one of the axles or make them both to turn in order to steer the thing.
Just one tip make sure you have the axles the right way so they work right. ie both facing forward if the back one is fixed and if both to steer then they face opposite in order to turn tight. I used a worm reduction gear box to steer it but a simple bar with holes in to take and secure the drop arm will do the job it's a bit messy to adjust and set but then you will only be manoeuvring on and off the road trailer and around the yard and slipway works for me.
I hope this gives you some ideas.
Cheers David.

Me too.....

I need to build something similar, I was thinking the other day that a trolley like that and hire a car trailer when needed was the thing to do.

That's very impressive.
And is that the tow car just visible in the picture?

No she has pulled the boat about a bit where she is.
As it has raised interest here are some more pics.
I think all self explanatory hope.
Cheers David.

The Trolly the MG is sat on is similar to my own, we used two EX Manchester Airport bagage tow truck front Axcels from a scrap yard I am sure there are still plenty of the older type from beem axels out there. Anything off a 50s car should do the trick.
The last one is of my pals MG we picked up from Oxford.

Sorry, I was being facetious. I appreciate you wouldn't pull a 5 ton boat with a small hatchback.

I'm always intrigued how you actually support the boat while sliding the trolley underneath. The angled props clearly add stability once the keel is on the ground or blocks, but they can't support the whole boat with the keel in mid air - or can they?

All the weight is on the wood blocks in the column.
Yes getting her onto the trolley was a bit of a jiggle but she was as light as she was ever going to be possibly no more than 2 ton so it wasn't to difficult and surprising how much she was stable on her keel 3/4 of a ton. I could hang off the gunwale and she did not move any way as much as I thought she would.

Very envious...

I'm very envious of your lovely truck!

I need to do a similar thing. This boat in the pic below is to have quite a big rebuild over this coming winter, new bottom, refasten, new deck. Clearly the trailer that she is on is a little beyond its best and its far too wide for my driveway. Its actually a cobbled up pair of two trailers welded one on top of the other, about a ton of steel, I reckon I can salvage quite a bit of material from it though.

I figure a trolley like yours would be ideal, I could keep it low and narrow which would be ideal. I could knock it up from scrap etc for very little cost, perhaps with a draw bar that allows me to steer it a bit, maybe make the draw bar unbolt, some decent support for under the fore and aft engine bulkheads and the keel etc. I would hire a flat bed to winch the whole thing onto when moving it.

I reckon the boat will weigh about a ton max, plus a bit for the trolley, so may 1300 kgs max.

The question is, will I be able to put a 20 foot load of 1300 kgs on a car trailer that is easily hireable?
