Makers of custom curved glass?

Pilkingtons dont make curved glass anymore

Part of Pilkingtons does - they have all the specs and moulds etc on hand for a wide range of 20th century British cars and can crank them out on demand. What we don't know (the lady I spoke to is checking with the workshop) is whether they can make a new shape to customer template, or will only use the old moulds in their store.

however there is a company based in the solent region that do curved glass

Do you have a name?

they had just had an estimate come back for another client from said firm for a curved piece 0.5M X 1.1M and that was over £600.

Currently the only positive option we have wants thousands, so if someone can do a good job for £600 I'd be delighted.

Personally i would want laminated, with tempered glass if that had happened whilst you were at sea you are then at risk of downflooding.

Yes - toughened is required, toughened-and-laminated is desirable if possible.

No real risk of downflooding, though - the cockpit has washboards and a hatch just like any other. The windscreen serves the same role as a sprayhood.

It may be worth supplying the frame & ordering the glass fitted in the frame

The bottom part of the frame is a relatively small aluminium extrusion - more than adequate when supported all along its length by the deck, but I'd expect it to flex quite freely if unscrewed. I would then end up with a frame-and-glass assembly that didn't fit the deck when I tried to put it back down.

Presumably this is an insurance claim, so would be good to present them with a firm quote for the job as it saves arguments with the claims handler.

If the existing frameis too "floppy" to retain a shape when detached, may i ask how you intend to give the pattern of the curve to the supplier

Hardboard in place of the glass, with the curve held by multiple "ribs" in say 18mm MDF edge-on. MDF marked for cutting using a spacer block in a similar manner to fitting a bulkhead to a curved hull side.

If you are going to make the pattern as you suggest then there is no reason why you cannot supply the frame as well & ask them to fit the glass to the frame- assuming that you can fit the frame back with the glass in the frame of course.

Thanks for all the advice and leads - in the end we've decided to bite the bullet and go for the original spare from the Swedish supplier. Too much risk of a third party item not fitting, due to inaccurate template and/or manufacturing tolerances.

I know the OP trying to "close" a thread never works :). But for the record I'm no longer looking for any further suggestions.

Cheers,

Pete
