I am thinking about trading up our single engine shaft drive boat, to something a couple of years old with 2 diesels ( say kad 32's) with legs. At the moment our engine maintenance costs are around £200 per year. I guess we'll be doing at least 100 hours per year. What sort of annual maintenance costs do you think we'll be looking at ?

Try £800 plus this seems to be a favourite figure for volvo maintenance.
I just paid £300 for tappet adjustment coolentflush and change on two engines. not including Vat.
To service two engines would be in the region of 750 and these are shafts,
Look at 1500 every three years for leg overhauls and gator change.

Don't skimp on the more difficult, we can all change oil and filters etc but tappets and drives less easy.

It depends very much on whether you get a main dealer to do it or not. If the engines are still under warranty and you go to an authorised VP service centre, then a KAD32's full annual service is about £450-£500 each. Cheaper if out of warranty and you can get "just" a decent mechanic to do it.

Mine is being serviced on Monday. Annual service + optional coolant change is £615 all in.

A leg service is about £350 (for a DP-E) + vat + cranage fees.

Of course, it all depends on where you are and who is local to you. If you get someone from further afield, they may quote less for the service but you'll probably have to pay travelling time. I shopped around but by the time I added the travel it worked out much of a muchness so I went for a local - at least I can go and shout more easily if they don't do it right !

Hope this helps.

Important point here - legs aren't service-free! And it'll cost a lift in an out to even begin to service them... legs alone will cost you a minimum of 600-700 a year by the time you add it all together.

Thanks for the replies .. certainly a cost to be taken into account when working out ' can I afford this' it's looking like averaging out at least £100+ per month. We would mostprobably take the boat out every season anyway, so the crainage costs for the legs wouldn't be an extra, nevertheless sound like potentially expensive beasties.
