I have a Sportrak which has given me six seasons' loyal service. It's an insurance policy against poor visibility, and a safety blanket really, as most of my navigation is Mk.1 eyeball.

I switched it on yesterday and it powered up, and gave me a position then, after a few minutes, it died on me and nothing would make it come back to life. It's not the power supply, because the tell-tale light on the plug is working (I run it from the 12v socket on the dashboard) and running it on batteries didn't achieve anything.

Any suggestions? My understanding is that the Sportrak has a small internal battery to allow for storage of permanent data such as waypoints and routes; I guess that after 6 years it may be feeling a little tired /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif could this be the cause of the shutdown?

All suggestions gratefully received. TIA.

waypoints and routes are stored in the permanent memory which lasts about 12 hours if the main batteries are removed or die.

Do you get a message asking you to initialise the unit ?

Did you see the battery life indicator ? What did it show ?

Have you changed the Power Off Timer?

Have you cleared all the memory ? This will make the unit ask to be re-initialised.

Hve you travelled a long distance from the place that you last used the unit ? If it is >500 miles, then it will want to re-initialise.

Were you operating it in the vicinity of static electricity - this can cause it to go into a cataleptic state.

I'd suggest you take out the 2 batteries and leave the unit for 24 hours. Load two new batteries, and see what happens.

Thanks for this.

No messages - the screen went blank having powered up normally. Negative to all your other questions.

In time honoured yottie fashion, I took the back off last night and had a poke around to see if I could see anything, followed by a wiggling of all the visible leads/other bits and a spray of WD-40. I then plugged it into the cigar lighter in the car and it fired up and remained on. So - either it's going get the grumps on the boat again, or I've fixed it.

Hurrah! -ish /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.
