hi, merc 40 blueband. i have differing information, so i thought i'd seek views and opinions of the panel.

what oil, grade etc. and why?. is synthetic better? this is an old leg, why do some advise against filling it with semi synthetic 75W gearbox oil... as in cars.

i might be missing something, so could anyone enlighten me?

thanks already, steve.

Don't claim to be expert, but thought lower case usually required EP90 (ep= extreme pressure?) . Maybe the 75W for (modern) car boxes doesn't need this.

On bikes (more confident here...) EP90 used for helically cut final drive gear on shaft drives...believe that these are quiter than straight cut but less efficient & generate more pressure, hence need for EP?.

Await complete dismissal of above by oil experts.

I've used cheapo comma EP90 in 2001 115hp & an upmarket bike EP90 + molyslip in a 2000 8hp, both w/o problem.

backs up what iv'e been led to believe for years. the confusion came over the ability of the oil to "absorb water".

but if it don't leak, then water can't get in. i'll just fill the thing with gear oil... it's what iv'e used in the past.

thanks andy. steve.

agree with the other bloke, ordinary ep is all ive ever used cause its got helically cut gears at right angles same as a car diff or bike (be em) as for synthetic or semi, huh!
i sometimes think that we get all bent out of shape trying to put a slant on things that neednt bother us just because its "marine" :)
