Good call!! Thought this post was about a huge warehouse full of candles........ or maybe a boat made of wax? Cool.

A chandler was originally just that; a merchant who sold candles. Came from the same French root as 'chandelier'. A ship's chandler was a merchant who sold candles to ships.

Very few chandlers left in London. Depending on what you want, you could try the following:-

Captain O M Watts 7 Dover St, London, W1S 4LD Tel: 020 74934633 (but I think they've gone)

Beale, Arthur Ltd 194 Shaftesbury Av, London, WC2H 8JP Tel: 020 78369034 (good lunchtime haunt)

Chas Newens Marine Co Ltd Embkt, London, SW15 1LB Tel: 020 87884587 (I keep meaning to go to Putney to have a look)

Isn't "a better chandlery" a contadiction of words, since when where bandits afforded compliments?
