Locking nuts

on the quadrant my cables end in relatively short stubs where a washer & nyloc is fitted. Is this sufficient or should I be looking for additional locking protection for the nyloc?

Not sure if I fully understand what you are describing but with any nut/bolt/threaded rod connection ideally you want at least 3 threads visible on the threaded part beyond the nut.
If you have doubts about the locking grip of the Nyloc then renew them, or use a thread locking compound, or deform the thread, or drill the threaded part and wire lock, or investigate some of the aviation locking nuts. Not sure how the latter would stand up to a marine environment.

Nylocs are perfectly OK, however (and this is where most cowboys cock up) they should only be used once, just get yourself a fist full of spares in case you need to take them off. You don't need to add another lock to the nyloc - it will be totally superfluous. If you use regular nuts then you will need a lock nut, but this can be a bugger to torque up in a confined space

Presumably you mean rods, bolts or some other threaded end-fitting, not cable. Cable terminals to the quadrant are typically secured with bull-dog grips, a spliced eye is neater but has to be made 'on site' after the cable is fitted.

I've had trouble with recently purchased nylocs not holding so well - my chandler says the quality has got poorer. As AlexL says, nylocs get weaker with repeated use. If you want something totally secure, I suggest A2 stainless castellated nuts, held in place by a split pin. Nylocs are ok as is, but use only once.
Spring washers or gear washers are also useful to lock nuts, but as a company for electrical installations we tend to double nut and thread seal, belt & braces.

steering quadrant that you are redoing cause the pros didnt get it right?
was always told that you should have 3 threads showing out of nut but if you think about it logically the nylon bit grips the thread where it grips and whether you have 3 or 1 or 30 it aint going to grip em if it aint touching, if it undoes itself it aint working so it is a bit pointless. just my cynical self thoughts. if you are worried about them coming loose try double nuts hardened up tight on each other. on my bene by the way the thru bolts are acting like cotter pins and are quite loose in their holes, i mean you can move em quite easily with your fingers although the nuts are tight. will take some digi pix next weekend and email em to you if you want

Think its probably the same .. I've removed the two nuts locked against each other cos the steering cables were much too tight even though the second nut was not fully on and have replaced them with a single nyloc. However wished the reassurance of the colective wisdom that this was the correct thing to do and that there really is no need for further locking protection.
