Hi all,
I appreciate all the dialogue here, thanks all for the comments and engagement with the update I gave.
We have not published this until now, however we also do have siginificant plans in the medium term to improve the facility. The start of that is creating the brand and Lochmaddy Marina is the brand we have chosen based on those plans. All I'd ask is for your continued patience whilst we get funding (it is owned by a charity) and of course planning applications take time. In terms of the name, we have to build our site to have effective search engine optimisation and that also takes time and is something we only wish to do once. A name change in the middle would not benefit anyone, not least the charity.

Anyway, I hope you like the site and more importantly the amount of information we have tried to supply as there really was not much at all - and most of it was out of date - until now. Efforts are being made to remove out of date information on other sites too to help with clarity over our offering, which is very clear from the website.

I hope to see you all at some point in Lochmaddy Marina; here's to a great 2022 season, Scott,
Excellent, thanks. Marina or not, it is all semantics, a quick look at the chart will inform any yachtsman not to expect shelter from the SE. I look forward to a visit later this year.

The word "marina" may have changed its meaning but I find my attitudes are also changing. I now feel a moral obligation to support the pontoon facilities that the locals have provided but not so the "real" marinas created by Holt and his ilk. Is it really mean to anchor and row ashore?

Not unless you feel a moral obligation to eat in hotels and restaurants, rather than cooking your own food and eating at home. ?
I prefer to anchor, and that gives me an awful lot more possibilities for places to visit, but surely it's down to personal preference.

Whilst there may be some semantics about the nomenclature (and I feel the word 'marina' indicates a degree of shelter and facilities which are not available in this case - something shared with 'Isle of Harris Marinas' in Tarbet and North Harbour Scalpay - although the latter has excellent shelter) this is useful facility and I feel the local community must be commended for their effort in continuing to support it and for their efforts. I have used it for short stays during the day to take on water, to do laundry, and to take the local bus to the (very good) supermarket at Balivanich for a 'big shop', but prefer Ardamadddy Bay for overnighting.

Let's not forget that the locally operated pontoons at Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland have failed and been removed because the support was not available.

I'm just reminded of how I got into Lochmaddy. The marina wasn't showing on my chart, and as I was coming South from Tarbert, the isles in the centre of the bay obscured the 'marina-ferry terminal', so I just couldn't see where the pontoons or associated 'stuff' was.
In a rowing boat, in the middle of the bay were a couple of folk dressed in the full monty of brand new fishing kit, so I sailed up to them, "Where's the marina?" They were Essex holiday makers out learning how to row, and hadn't a clue what I was talking about, nor do I believe that they were thirsty any longer, either.
I offered to give them a tow, and take them into somewhere safe, but they declined the offer.
I resolved to just do an orbit around the little isles, which (of course) showed me where I wanted to be.
From that day on, I've paid more attention to my destination, and google Earthed it for revision.
This was in the weeks before the big storm, as well as the Hebrides ferry hitting the pontoon that I'd be tied up to!
