Some months ago there was publicity in the local press about Liverpool coastguard closing down and their responsibility transferring too Holyhead coastguard, There was even a tv article on the local news about them being there for x number of years and how we would lose out without local knowledge of the area.
Over the last couple of days I have heard them giving out weather forecasts etc,any one know whats going on?

This from Liverpool Coastguard's Facebook page:

"If your at sea and hear someone using the call sign liverpool coastguard it is not liverpool. It is people at other sites. Please do not think liverpool is open or been reprieved it's closed"

(I'm pretty sure all that refers to Liverpool the coastguard station, not Liverpool, the city, although after the Villa result you never know.)

Why do they pretend to be Liverpool CG, when it's not, who actually is it then???

Liverpool/Crosby CG

I do not think it is actually "closed" various CG functions are still based there, but radio and coordination activitities have moved to Holyhead and the new network being phased in this year. I guess our VHF call sign habits will take time to adjust and the "Holyhead" team must be responding as "Liverpool" if called as Liverpool. Not my area though, but thinking now, prompted by this thread, we are heading to simply calling "Coastguard" without Thames, Dover, Portland etc. prefix.

Cheers

Liverpool coastguard is closed. Holyhead have taken over their patch, but are using the call sign "Liverpool Coastguard" on the old Liverpool aerials. The system will be tweaked again in coming months so the thinking was to not change the call signs more than once over a short space of time.

Why "UK" ?

You'll have to ask them. But I guess their thinking was based on the long history of "<place> Coastguard", so that if they're going to be country-wide then "UK Coastguard" is the logical successor. Plus, in some places with a decent radio you might be heard in both the UK and France / Ireland / Belgium etc, and it's useful to specify which side you want.

To me it rolls off the tongue better than just "Coastguard", so if they're going to have a national callsign then this one seems fair enough.

I sailed in and out of both Liverpool and Hollyhead over Easter. On one of the routine broadcasts the CG got mixed up and changed from Liverpool to Hollyhead and back in the course of one bulletin! Another yachtie called them up and they said they were Liverpool CG for the purposes of the bulletin but this would close in September and they would be 100% Hollyhead from then onwards. Seems daft to me - why not just use the Hollyhead handle right away? I expect there has been some promise made to (or by) a politician so they have to carry on the nonsense.
