I have just bought an Atlantic 49 which is currently under a Greek flag, I wish to throw away my shackles and live aboard my boat in Greece, my question is this:

Do I need a professional qualification to skipper the boat (was thinking of Day skipper but not sure if that is adequate).

Also to ensure I dont run out of money, from time to time I was thinking of offering sailing holidays out, what sort of sailing qualifications / insurance would I need to do this.

Any help you can give me on the above would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone else has done this themselves - I would love to have a good chat with them so they can let me know the pitfalls etc.

Thanks

Rob

I cant help with the sailing holidays, but i am sure the boat will have to be coded. As for qualifications you need an ICC in Greece, passing dayskipper will give you the pass for this. Apply to RYA £30 ish or free if you are a member.

Rob,

Havent done this in Greece, but have done it in Portugal.

The boat will have to be coded and inspected by local authorities.

Normally you wouldnt be able to skipper a boat for financial gain without Yachtmaster commercial skipper, but dont know the laws in Greece. I cant see an icc being adequate though.

It is also highly probable that your insurers would demand the qualifications, but as it is a Greek flagged boat you would probably be using Greek insurance.

Also, you will probably find that to work there you will have to register for some sort of residencia in order to pay taxes, iva etc.

PM me if you want any further info

Hi Trazie.
I meant he needed ICC for basic qualification not for charter /forums/images/icons/smile.gif To work in Greece you need a tax number first called AFM. Then you need residents permit, applied for at police station within one week of arrival. I have been and done this myself recently.

Hi,

Sounds basically like the set up in Portugal then, just different names for things.
Also helps if you know the lingo!

Cheers

Thanks for your help so far, it's really been usefull. Just thought I would give you some more background info.

One of the reasons I was thinking of chartering is because I am purchasing the boat as an ex charter, to avoid paying vat I am having to set up a Greek charter company. If the company buys the boat - I have been told I would be vat exempt.
(If anyone knows any draw backs to this method, please shout up).

As part of setting up a charter company in Greece, I will have to be a resident or have a director who is Greek. Either way this is not a problem as I have family in Greece.

Once again, if anyone has done this recently or in the past and can help me in any way, I would be really grateful.

Thanks

Rob

hi
in greece you will need a greek partner who will have to own 51pc of the boat to allow you to set up a co... not good idea.. you can pay the vat in any country so choose one that is cheapest ..you useto be able to pay in spain without taking your boat there and it was the cheapest but i dont know if the loophole is closed now....you will have to change to a union flag and get the ssr..you canot charter but i think the rules may have changed now...you must have ..icc also commercial endorsement to charter legaly..many have "friends visiting and paying expences"..hope you did not buy your boat through Gregory.. are you in agean or ionian? ..
