I have a blue denim Breton cap that is absolutely great - you lose a lot of heat thro your head - even with a good mane like mine, plus the peak is excellent in low sun. And it keeps my hair out of my eyes when it is in need of its annual cut.

But I probably wouldn't wear a white "Ossifer" style one except as a pee take.

Of course, if you don't have the skill & confidence to wear it, you would be frightened of people who are insecure enough to equate such things (with Blue Ensigns?) as an indicator of something.

Just ludicrous
Not half as ludicrous as my red and white one.

Actually was wearing it to shield the light from the camera viewfinder Electronic viewfinder on mine ... what ever happened to optical viewfinders ?

Why are you worried about what people choose to wear on their heads?

Allocate your snigger-factor accordingly:

-knotted-hankies
-baseball caps (cheap)
-baseball caps (expensive)
-baseball caps (ironic)
-beanies
-flat caps
-Tilley hats
-leather hats (brimmed)
-berets
-burkhas
-turbans
-skull caps
-breton caps
-sou'wester hats (yellow - other colours available?)
-dead animal pelts
-fake dead animal pelts
-wigs
-condoms
-suncream
-goose-fat

List not exhaustive.

The steaming bonnet only works if suitably distress, ie braid green and top dirty grey. Otherwise you look like a carpark attendent or a wet behind the ears first trip third mate. With the appropiate level of command and skill.
The classic distressed steaming bonnet can be seen worn by the uboat commander in "Das Boot"

In matters of dress I would always defer to Minn:

http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2254839#post2254839

The key points are:

"Nobody ever wears a yachting cap; this is extinct and attemps to revive the custom will result in laughter......
..........The last man I can recall as routinely wearing a yachting cap and not provoking laughter was Sir Alec Rose.

Most other forms of headwear have their place, tho I personally find baseball caps a little difficult on those older than 17 summers.

I'm not sure which is the cap you mean.

However, we have a complete collection of hats from which to choose:-

Tilley hats (heavy and light)
Breton caps
Souwester rain hats
Fleecy lined rain hats with peak and ear covers (Musto)
Fleecy lined rain hats with peak and ear covers (West Marine)
Balaclavas plain
Balaclavas with peak, convert to woolly peaked hats.
Bobble hats with bobbles
Bobble hats in oiled wool without bobbles
Baseball hats in a multitude of colours and styles from yottie to golf
Sun visors as above.

Daft isn't it.

I have one, but;
Its very good when cold, but doesn't cover ears. I don't have a beard so I don't plan to wear it till i do, or turn 60. The breton cap is less comfortable than a baseball hat, and can't be shoved into a pocket.

It does suit the boat, which my normal sailing/driving rig of baseball/"chicester" hat and shades don't.

There are two ways of wearing it; like a Uboat captain (pulled back) or like a flat cap (pulled forward). Wearing it sat on top of your head makes you look like an extra from a Hovis ad, and should never be attempted in public. (If you want to wear one, avoid this effect by steaming it over a kettle first then shapig it to your head).

But Phil IS an Ossifer not a pretentiuos prick. And he's a damn good helmsman too, by all accounts. If he impressed Uffa, that's a good enough recommendation for me.

Anyway, why should I care what other people's opinions are? I don't need their silly opinions do I?

I have loads of opinions of my own :D

I never go to sea without peak cap, nautical blazer and whites. At 18.00 hours I can be found in mess kit, complete with bumfreezer and bow tie.

One needs to maintain some decorum and I just ignore the sniggers.

Ah, time for another pink gin.
