Lists of \'Must Have\' kit for a new boat(er)?

So, with the Beaulieu Boat Jumble fast approaching -- does anyone have a list of 'essential kit' for keeping/taking onboard a (first) boat... destined at least initially to make relatively short hops in sight of the coast (probably between Weymouth and IoW)?

I've trolled the forums and found great lists for 'grab bags' (some of which would suggest the need for extra flotation devices given their implied bulk!) -- but nothing on the list of 'essentials'.

What's the priority beyond lifejackets, flares and a small toolkit (inc. a good knife)...... ?

A GPS, and i think a must is a VHF.

I'm sure you know what the usual stuff is, But one thing i've added this week, after i found a water pipe on the engine was leaking cause it hadn't been connected properly when winterized, Is a set of Softwood Plugs. So as i can quickly plug any hoses, pipes or holes that i may come accross.

That's the sort of thing that's useful - beyond the obvious! Sounds like a large roll of heatproof metal tape and waterproof 'gaffer' tape would come in handy too...

Spares kit for the engine if your going coastal is a must IMHO. Some people hereabouts are surprised that I carry a spare coil and starter and alternater. But they have all come into use at one time or another. Also a spare raw water pump, but thats another story!

We used to have a contibutor here who seemed to specialise in all sorts of such lists and you might be interested to see the items he advised he had removed from his boat:-

"spare anchors, engines, heaters, charts, boating books, TV, DVD player, toaster, kettle, spare fuel, tool kits, spare ropes, lifejackets, wet weather gear, dive tank & drysuite, cutlery, crockery, spare fenders, emergency rations & water, spare boat, cooking equipment, BBQ, tables, chairs, party lighting, camp beds, emergency clothing & tent e.t.c. "

His thread was headed "Amazing how it all fits" but some of us were more amazed how it all floats!

From personal experience I would suggest you should add as essential in addition to that already suggested:-
Water/windproof jacket(s) - I think it's worth getting good marine quality
Pilot books, almanac, charts
Ropes
Cleaning materials + hosepipe, bucket etc

Re: Lists of \'Must Have\' kit for a new boat(er)?

The 'spare engine' question is a key one for me. In the Cranchi owners manual, it specifies where the outboard (which can be supplied as part of a standard option kit on a new boat) should be stowed -- implying that it's a good idea.

Given my 'in sight of land' ambitions, do I really need to consider an outboard? I'm rather hoping that membership of 'Seastart' c. £140 p.a. rather than a £1-2k purchase) and a good handheld VHF will suffice.

Agree withh all that have posted and would definitely have:

A well equipped First Aid Kit,
A good strong Torch,
A throw line,
A very sharp quite large Pen Knife,
A Hand Bearing Compass,
A small pack of flares, (for night time use mainly)
Fire Extinguisher
Wooden Bungs
Safety Harness
Hand Held Air Horn
Hand Held GPS
Mobile Phone, (with local Coast Guards number programmed in)
Bottle of Drinking Water
A CD, (for using as a signalling device)
Small rubber bucket on a rope, (for bailing if bilge pumps fail)
Sea Anchor. (To hold your position until Seastart arrive)

and theres probably more, but hope this helps. Paul

Thanks Planty -- not only am I now armed with a list to go to Beaulieu next week, but I have the perfect excuse to justify upgrading the radio cassette player to a CD system )

Surprising how I would have left out some of the very basic stuff (e.g. the bucket).

Hi,

an interesting read is also the 'offshore special regulations', found at www.orc.org
click on special regulations at the bottom left side.

These regulations specify the required items on different types of regatta (offshore, coastal, ...), and give an indication of what type of equipment is wise to have, including basic stuff like 2 buckets, torches, flares.

Some good advice from all the posters here. You could also contact RNLI and ask them to arrange a SeaCheck for your boat. It takes about an hour or more and is free and worthwhile having done as they cover all aspects of kit, safety, maintainance, comms etc. and vary the report depending on what use you will put your boat to. Cheers. Roy

OOHH you liar. I sat in your prop wash 'till just passed Old Harry. By that time Duncan had caught up with us. The only reason I opened the throttles was the moaning from the kids "Go faster dad, go on go faster" since the end of the swash.

Specific to your proposed area -
(1) mobile phone numbers/call signs of forum individuals who regularly bob about in those waters
(2) suitable tipple matched to above for 'payments for services rendered'
(3) tender to get to Banks Arms , Swanage or Lulworth hostelries (doesn't need to be big or clever)
(4) Almanac - phone numbers for Marinas to book overnight berths and proper tidal information.

The proper list of recomended safety equipement can be found most places.
