Well, two problems solved today and both with the aid of vacuum technology.

1. Changed the oil in my two AQD32A's and used one of those vacuum tank thingies hired for the day from my friendly local chandler (Steve at Chertsey Marine-nice guy) for a very reasonable £10. Couldnt believe extracting eight litres of oil from each engine could be so clean and easy. Pity I didnt do quite as good a job of pouring the new stuff in but cest la vie...the engines could do with a good exterior clean up anyway./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

2. 'Flushed' with success I moved on to task number two...trying to extract the crud from the bottom of my 115gallon diesel tank. My P32 has been Thames based for years and, as a run down to LImehouse and St Kats at the end of the month is bound to shake things up a bit, I decided to try and remove any solid 'refuse' rust bits etc that might be lurking on the bottom ready to get all shook up and block the fuel filters.
My newly developed DTVC (diesel tank vacuum cleaner - of which more later} worked beyond my wildest dreams and I extracted over half a kilo of solid dross from the tank in about half an hour - all accomplished thru the fuel gauge sender hole and without without having to drain the tank.

Just for once my day was one of negative pressure...who said life sucks....????

Tony - you had more luck than I did with a spherical sucky thing. It was clean, but not very easy even sucking hot oil up thru a tube pushed down the dipsick pipe.

Better out than in..........

crudandsample.jpg

Bag of crud weighs just over a pound !

crudintank.sized.jpg

Golf ball gives some idea of the crud volume !

fineresid.sized.jpg

This is a sample taken from the tank after about 30 mins of 'hoovering'. There is some fine residue which has settled at the bottom.

Question for Dom........as this whole exercise was conducted by sucking fuel out of the bottom of the tank, through a coarse filter and then returning it to the top of the tank I would expect any water present to still be in suspension and to eventually settle. Will Soltron take care of this water residue?

Tony you do more provarocating than Happy1. No I cant inflict that on you, can I!!

That diesel looks orible. Just stick some Solly in it. Cant say it will gobble all the various crap you have in there. But try taking a sample a week or two after.

Tony please please don’t bin that crap. I want it for testing.

Soltron will aid in releasing the water from your system however, we have no evidence to prove this and I cant guarantee anything on that subject. We just know it happens but don’t know by what quantity. Can assure you soltron will assist in breaking up the left overs.

Re: Better out than in..........

can't compete on crud (yet!) but the diesel in the filters looked way worse.....as Barry will testify!
Now about this diesel tank sucky thingy.......I was just going to use my dingy bilge pump but you seem to have a better option?
