Life raft servicing and flares in Greece... What are the requirements

No, there is no requirement for any safety equipment (apart from a radar reflector to comply with SOLAS) on a UK leisure vessel under 13m. However, in theory the Greek authorities could insist on equipment if you keep your boat in Greek territorial waters, although as you will see above they rarely (at least in the past) bother. You can find useful information on the subject on the RYA and CA sites.

I am a bit confused by the responses?
Is a liferaft / flare set / EPIRB required on a UK SSR Part 3 registered boat under Greek law?
Is a liferaft :( more :( expense that I need to worry about?

I've never been asked to show these by the PP police but, until this year I have always been on charter or flotilla yachts, so, perhaps, they just assume that the charter companies are toeing the line.

If the charter company's boat(s) are Greek flagged, which is most the Greek requirements apply. There are NO "SSR" requirements regarding safety equipment. (BTW. You posted a tortology since "SSR" and British Register of Shipping "Part III" are the same thing.

Thanks for the clarification.
That is good to know since, although a stowable liferaft would be nice, with my plans for inshore cruising and a limited budget, it is not #1 on my shopping list.
An acceptable attitude in the Disneyland that is the Ionian "Inland Sea" but the Greeks don't operate as robust a lifeboat service as we do. I wouldn't venture too far up the gulfs though without a raft.

Greek Safety Requirements

It would be interesting to know exactly what the Greek laws require of Greek flagged private yachts. How many flares and what type. Do the laws state OOD flares must not be carried. Is a liferaft required and must it be within its servicing schedule (our old Avon strictly requires annual service but the specialist tell us 3 years is OK provided kept dry). Is there a specification for fire extinguishers. What other equipment is specified, eg vhf

Can anyone provide a link where this is covered in English. I cannot find anything on RYA.

Thanks Pinetops

This is all I could find on the Greek rules:

The relevant RYA publication is here:

I am pretty sure the jag27 chartered from sailing holidays a few years ago didn't.

I beleive that the SH Jag 27s had some sort of dispensation about liferafts because of their LOA. All their other boats had liferafts. But, of course, the SH boats are 'coded' and the same may not apply to domestic pleasure boats.
(I have happy flotilla and charter memories of those Jag 27s. Great little sailing boats. I nearly bought one from them.)

Dimitris Koutsondontis, the (outgoing) manager of Gouvia Marina DID buy one. It is kept in a pristine condition. We chartered one in 1978, our first experience of sailing in Greece. Never been able to break the addiction since!

perhaps, they just assume that the charter companies are toeing the line.

No, they don't assume. Before a charter boat leaves port the papers must be shown to the PP and they should include the test certificates for life raft, radio, EPIRB etc. as well as the crew list, up to date insurance. The boat will also have been inspected by the Hellenic Registry or Lloyds in order to keep its commercial licence and the inspection includes all the safety gear, checking date of flares etc. At least at the time of this inspection everything will have been in order ...

I guess in reality the money spent on flares would be better spent on an epirb. I chose to carry a plb when I left the uk because I was/am doing single handed sailing. Before setting off across Biscay I asked the guys at Falmouth and their feeling was the plb would be more than adequate for such a trip. I suppose sailing in close proximity of other boats in the med that probably don't have their VHF radio on some flares could be beneficial. A life raft is a 'nice to have' and would come into its own in an event of fire for example. There seems to be much 'ticking of boxes' with officialdom without seriously considering the potential risk. Do I feel the need for a shed load of parachute flares, smoke cans, handheld flared? No I can't say I do really.

I've dealt with Ionian safety in Levkas.
Nikos Stamatakis is a lovely man & extremely helpful. I take it you have the correct email address, ioniansafety@hol.gr
He does take a while to reply to his email sometimes but will reply eventually.

Nikos did indeed reply and very quickly too so thank you and everyone else for their advice on this. All seems in hand now.
