I thought the life of orange flexible gas pipe was from the date stamped on the pipe, but my chandler assures me it is from when the pipe is installed and first carries gas. But his pipe is dated 2010. Should I buy elsewhere?

Your chandler is incorrect. All rubber products deteriorate from the moment they are made, nothing to do with anything they may be in contact with, just exposure to air. The date marked on the hose is the one to go for, but you may be lucky to find stock newer than 2010.

He'd be lucky to find a surveyor or insurer to agree with him.
Though it cost me rather more than it's true value, I got hose from Southampton Calor centre only 6 months since manufacture.
People like that, with an high turnover, are more likely to have recent-manufacture hose than a chandler.

For the boat safety scheme survey the orange hose has to be in good condition and free from any signs of perishing. If the hose is bent over and the surface shows no slight cracking or splitting it is okay.

The date on the hose on my boat makes it over 5 years old and it passed the BSS test in January. I had a conversation about it with the examiner prior to the test.
If the hose is inside a gas locker it will be protected from sunlight so may well last considerably more than 5 years.

By all means replace the hose after it reaches 5 years from the date of manufacture if you wish.

I agree with the suggestion that a caravan shop or Yeomans or the like will most lkley have a hose with this years date on it.

PPPPPP- if you recognise that

If you can do a tight 180 bend on the hose with no sign of cracking, it's fine. If the hose is rigid, change it.

Ohh, dont tell SWMBO! 42 years down the chute:D
Seriously-last Autumn, checked our in locker hose after 4 years of ownership- 1990's!
Looked fine, but did not want to risk a Lord Trenchard, so;
Went to Chi Caravans- per earlier Forum advice- like Soton Calor, choose a high turn over outlet,
bought a 2m length- need about 1m, and wanted backup if needed- I'm deffo a Wise Virgin waiting 4 the Bridegroom in Gods bothering terms- I'd have had a spare wick n scissors too:D

Yes it was Lord Trenchard I was refering to ealier when the Skipper was seriously injured. Nice boat the first one I ever sailed on and the skipper nice guy, he took me for my Yactmaster examination.

However the problem was a loose gas fitting not the flexiable pipe that caused the problem. So whilst we are concentrating on flexi pies here the moral is inspect the whole system.

Joint service rules since then are when using the cooker -on at the bottle off at the bottle-, I have followed this procedure for many years.

I recently removed a hose I installed on my caravan back in 1994-gas hasnt been used since early 2000s.The inner black rubber had completely cracked even though the outer orange sheath looked OK so be warned.
Oh and just as a diversion a propane bottle recently installed on my portable home heater will only turn off properly with a great deal of overtightening of the valve-it will be going back when empty covered in marker pen!
