Can anyone tell me which oil and how much I should use in the gearbox of a Lewmar Anchorman 1200. The manual does not specify the type of oil. When I removed the gearbox cover. the content was a reddish, runny paste
Thanks all.

As with all things Simpson Lawrence I'd recommend you contact John at SL spares (www.slspares.co.uk). He was an engineer there before they sold out to Lewmar and he bought over their spare kit. I've always found him really helpful - I'm not connected to him in any way.

Check this thread. Lofran cayman - see if the picture looks familiar (its not a SL windlass) - but you need new seals (and hopefully nothing else but oil).

But clean and grease the shaft. Check for the need of Duralac.

I don't know the windlass - sorry cannot help further. I'm too young to know SL windlass :). You underline, again, these devices are amazingly robust.

I downloaded the manual and as you say, the lubricant is not specified and the gearbox is 'sealed for life'. My similar Maxwell windlass takes EP 90 gearbox oil that would be the first choice for a drive like these.

Thank you all. My first thought was EP90, not sure how much to fill it though. Although the gearbox is 'sealed for life' the cover is removable. I have contacted SL Spares. The shaft needed a new roller bearing and oil seals.
The next issue is new carbon brushes for the motor. Any ideas please? They are stamped M80.
Cheers.

When I serviced the gearbox of my ancient Lewmar windlass - and replaced all the seals and bearings, the engineer who helped me told me that EP90 was standard for these kinds of gear boxes. I noted that he only filled it 1/2 way before putting the top back on

I spoke to John at SL Spares. Very helpful as people say.
His reply:
"Use a car engine oil, DO NOT use a car gearbox oil as it attacks the
bronze. Use 0.120L, in the main box, not sure of quantity in the input area
where the extra gear is."
