Leaking Lifting Mechanism HELP!!

I realize it is probably due to the fact I have a drying out mud berth, but as the tide is going out (and only out) water syphons up the lifting mechanism under the table and pours out until the tide is out totally. My old J22 with lift keel never had this problem, and I'm at a loss to know why the Jouet should have. Any ideas on why or how to stop it? Without going to a more expensive mooring that doesn't dry out that is!

Could it be that as the hull settles into soft mud, the keel box exit is sealed by the mud, and further pressure under the hull is oozing mud up into the box, which then displaces the water above it?

In which case, can't think of a fix?!

Thanks for replying Boatless, that's pretty much the conclusion I can to. It's amazing what you can catch with a black plastic box though, three tides max usually fills it.

All the best

I've had an idea... Do you have any skin fittings exiting just above or below the waterline, that are left exposed when you're dried out? If you have, an 'overflow' pipe from just below the top of the keel case to a t connection in that.

Hello again Boatless, I thought of this as a solution as well, but will have to look into it to see if I have the connections etc, but what I don't understand is why it is doing it? Apart from the mud acting as a plunger, why should it do it on my boat and no one elses?

I can only think that you have Railtrack's 'wrong type of mud'.
