I am buying a 34 ft yacht which will be kept at Plymouth. Does anyone know the differences in ability between a Delta & a Fortress as a kedge anchor?

Yes Ariadne,
I tried Google. I couldn't find the answers I was looking for. Does one of these hold better than the other?

It's hard to get definitive answers to questions about anchor holding power. The size of the anchor obviously is very important.
A Fortress, by common consent, seems to make an ideal kedge anchor principally because, for its holding power, it is very light and therefore easily handled. It would be fairly common practice to use the Delta as the main anchor.

Minalto. No they do not 'hold' similarly. The Delta is a great all round anchor, sets and holds very well. The fortress is light and strong and will, when fully set, provide a really good hold in most weather, but, being of a Denforth type design I would not be happy to leave the boat unattended through a change of tide with the Fortress, whereas the Delta is more likely to remain set or to re-set should that be necessary.

Fortress makes a first class kedge.

You do know about Google search?

The Delta is a galvanized heavy steel anchor, the Fortress is aluminium alloy, very light and easily deployed.

The Fortress is your kedge anchor, We use a FX11 on 10m of 10mm chain and 50m of 18mm rode.

You do know how to read and answer a question properly, he is asking for the differences in ability obviously from forum members.

There have been many posts on the subject of Fortress anchors as kedges. They hold extremely well, seem to bed rapidly on a wide variety of bottoms and are easy to handle by virtue of their light weight. As has been said, there are some questions over their use as the bower anchor, although some seem to do so without problems.

For the same size boat as yours I use a FX16, the size recommended when using it as a bower, but you would probably get away with a FX11 specifically as a kedge.

Fortress anchors are very suitable for ketch anchor; they are light, high holding, store flat and easily handled. Deltas are a typical heavy bow anchors. Also, there is a huge difference in price.

It depends on what you want the second anchor for. The most common use is to hold the boat in one direction such as off a quay or in a tidal stream the Fortress is ideal for this as it holds well with a direct pull and is light and easy to handle. A Delta is better when the boat swings and the anchor needs to rest. It is bulky and heavy for easy handling off the stern.
