I've followed all the posts about valve jobs (the one that needs doing every 200 hours) on KAMD 300's and I've seen spannermans instructions on doing it your self. Not feeling confident enough for DIY, we took the boat for an engineer who charged 11 hours work on two engines!

I felt a bit ripped off but had no choice really /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

What have you other KAMD300 owners been charged for the job?

I understand from a very trustworthy engineer that on KAD/KAMD 44's and 300's the valve adjustment is 5 hours per engine. So add an hour for mucking about, lifting floor panels etc etc I reckon he is about sport on.

It was one of the reasons I wanted simpler KAD 43's.

had couple of quotes at about £200 per engine. Then of course there was travelling time. Looking at the invoice, traffic that day was quite appalling.

The hours are about right, if anyone does it in 3 hrs I'd be a bit worried in case they cheated and just bent the injector pipes as I have heard some 'engineers' have done!

might add, both quotes were from Volvo dealers, one of whom certainly isnt renown for keen pricing(though even that quote included travel time from 1 mile away!). Dont know how many hours they suggested it was going to take, but I guess if we are talking about £50p/h, then 4 hours?
Just have to believe they will do it properly.

Ok, thank you for your comments. It seems that 11 hours is about right then.

Maybe I should print out those instructions and get my headlamp and Leatherman out /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Yes takes about 2 hours max if inc in a service as the oil filter has to come off, and I DO undo the injector pipes and take them right off seen bent pipes plenty of times too.

Silly question but are you referring to Tappet adjustment ?

I thought most modern engines were overhead cams now ?

Do the new volvos still have tappets ?

Yep the 44`s and 300 still have tappets only twice as many. I had 300`s on my last boat and saved a bundle of dosh by stripping all the stuff away for the engineer. Took me an hour per engine to remove oil filter, injector pipes and rocker covers and about the same to replace afterwards. Volvo trained engineer charged me 50 squids to do the tappets and taught me how to do it at the same time. Beware of #1 injector. It has a wire attached and is expensive to replace if you trap the wire and break it. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Thanks doublevision and Kev, I know Volvo are incredibly reliable and one reason is they have not pushed the boundaries of technology too quickly (in the past anyway) but Tappets are something that I will not be sorry to see the end of. (my Cummins-merc are overhead cam and tappet free /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif)

I have made another little faux par /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Apparently I do have tappets but they are self adjusting and hydraulic.
