If you leave a toilet idle for some time flush it with lots of fresh water then it won't smell. If it hasn't been use for a year the pump will be very stiff. Tip some cooking oil in and gently pull the handle up down a few times and it should be fine. There is no reason to buy a new one even if it is blocked. If it is close the throughulls, replace the joker valve, take the outlet pipe off and bash it hard on the ground to get the calcium deposits off. All very easy to do.
