I\'ve had enough!!

I am still looking for a Yacht, and getting very frustrated. I've seen some right dogs at silly prices.

I need to get off this island and soon...... getting stir crazy.
I have viewed a Sigma 33 and several Westerly's also a Rival but it would need a lot of work. Moody are too expensive IMHO for what they are, just another yacht but with a name.
Most of these yachts have been 20 to 30 years old so showing their age, items like winches sails and even running rigging seem to be the most in need of repair/replacement

Not really looked at any Bav's/Ben/Jen's etc. as the best examples/prices seem to be in europe.

The parameters are:
Must be able to Ocean cruise.
Fin keel and wheel steering
max 36 ft.
£30,000 tops. ( plus an additional £5000 for updating)
1 decent size cabin for SWMBO ( so maybe a center cockpit?)
Not to worried about location but preferably UK or Europe

Is it worth waiting until winter for a better selection?
Why is it that Yachts in the states seem to be so much cheaper?

Any thoughts????

Re: I\'ve had enough!!

Same problem - I posted my experience in a reply in the "Huddersfield to Hamble" thread. Essentially, I gave up like you and lined up a number of viewings over two day trips to Holland, both private and via brokers. I found the Dutch Boatbank by far the best resource (http://www.botenbank.nl/boatbank/index.html). Boats generally better quality and better value than here in the UK, IMHO. A good exchange rate means it might be worth you taking a look.

Lots of cheap flights even by the usaul scheduled airlines.

Re: I\'ve had enough!!

Ever though of the Moody Halberdier? Not many around, approx 30 built at Swanwick by Moodys in the late 60 early 70s to a very high spec Lloyds 100 A1.

I have one, and no its not for sale, but I do know of one that is. They are actually classed as a motor sailer but dont let that put you off, its got proper yacht lines and a big Ketch rig, just means that with a half covered wheelhouse you get to the end of your journey in good shape.Center cockpit, Fore and aft heads and loads of sensible accomodation.

The boat I refer to as being for sale is possibly being looked at by someone I know, so it would not be fair introduce some one else at this stage. Also this boat is abroad but at a very keen price IMHO.

If the person I mention cant be bothered to go and see it, Ill give you the details if you want.

These are the old pre producion line Moodys and its certainly what I would choose for what you have in mind.

Info of sorts on the Moody web site, also a report is available on this site from one of the old mags articals ( says all sorts of nice things quite rightly)

Im off to cook on a beach in Portugal on tuesday (boring) for 10days if you are interested send a PM.

Good hunting Nick

Very nice boat the Halberdier, as is the Carabineer?, heavily built. I thought about of one of the 46' versions, had a look at a couple, 42' and 46'. (I think the sizes are correct)

Re: I\'ve had enough!!

I saw lovely Carbineer last week in Dartmouth (also a beaut Halberdier) But the Carbineer is much much bigger all round. Sort of thing Id buy If I had a huge pension to look fwd to ( and not much chance of that anymore!).

I sail my Halberdier on my own mainly, and find its easily managed, often sailing just on the mizzen and roller genny. However when I sail with my wife, 4 kids and the dog it really comes into its own!!

I know the one, wearing a white ensign? I used to share a berth with her at Noss, lovely boat, but it should be, they've poured thousands into her, far more than she's worth to be honest. But she has been modded quite heavily aswell. Very comfortable.

Re: I\'ve had enough!!

I dont know about the ensign as she was in the Dart marina and no one aboard. I think "Rum Ricky" was the name.

Looked gorgeous and made me feel quite humble. I put a note o/b to see if the owner wanted to join our little Halberdiers "coffee circle" just a few boats, but we exchange bits of news; only 4 of us so far, but that does include 2 in the UK. 1 in US. and 1 in Oz.

Quite nice, especially if there are only a few boats around, I think the 30 odd boats are widely dispersed as so many have been sailed far afield, and owners in say Oz previously knew of no other boats to exchange info with.

Interested to note that you say "prob more than shes worth".. compared with what?... Bav 37// New Moody?.. I think Id rather have the an immac Halberdier with all the new gear.

Mind you I do see that there is one for sale in the Baliarics for EUR 135k.. Blimey!!! I dont think so...

Re: I\'ve had enough!!

I meant the carbineer actually! She's the one I used to share a berth with. There was a Hlaberdeier in Torquay marina, which had engine problems, due to an idiot messing with the electrics, I think it was for sale, but that was a while ago, two years!!
