The club is thinking of an event to the Scillies next summer. Most will trail to Penzance, though a few will cruise there. Probably stay for 5 days.

No idea of numbers yet, but what are chances of booking mooring bouys in St Mary's, and keeping them in what can be a busy time. Might vacate them to anchor up overnight in other locations once or twice. Good locations to anchor for a bunch of boats from 21' to 33' including Ribs, sportsboats and cruisers?

Any practical advice, bearing in mind some boats quite small, so will have to keep a good look at weather forecasts in case we need to cut things short and return to Penzance

Why not ring the harbour master there and find out for sure. We were there last August. Luckily to find the only available bouy. Loads of others tried to anchor in between the buoys, but of course they could not. With that and fog, we staid glued to the buoy for three days, before coming back. The seas around lands end are quite rough at the best of times and the shipping all converge there and dont forget about the fog. St Marys is nice enough but surprised at the large amount of tourists. (Not my scene)

Cant remember the names of all the anchorages. Get a pilot book. But there all exposed to one wind or other. Soneed to move around as wind changes. Sort of place where you could quite easy be up all night moving because of wind or tide. Still, if you want a challenge, but I would not advise it in a small boat. Mind you, I would not advise crossing Lyme bay either!!

You do have to watch the wind direction when you are there and be prepared to choose the appropriate anchorage. The trip across can be pretty rough, so timing is paramount. You need to be ready to head back if the weather looks like its changing for the worse. I went across in a Fleming 53 a few years ago and conditions were OK as we left Penzance, but boy was it rough when we really met the Atlantic !! You really need settled weather, but with that caveat it was brilliant when we got there.

If you can't get into St. Mary's (if full up) try New Grimsby, H. M. is Henry Birch 01720 422792 or his mobile 0378 601237 Showers (£2) at quay. Great food at New Inn. Island Hotel is expensive for drinks, great view though!
