Is this a legal ensign for a British registered ship?

Contrary to popular belief, it appears to be so.
The Scottish Red Ensign is shown in a number of flag charts of the 17th and early 18th centuries. , The consensus of informed opinion seems to be that it was actually flown before 1707 by the Scots merchant marine and by the tiny Scots navy. It is shown on the flag charts of William Downham 1685-6, Allard 1695 & 1705 and of B Lens c1700.

Following the Act of Union between England and Scotland of 1601 and up to the Act of (Political) Union of 1707, the English and Scots navies were still separate entities as before 1601, so flew the ensigns of their respective countries. When the two navies were combined in 1707 to become the British Royal Navy, the Scottish navy consisted of only 3 ships. (The English navy had 277 ships at this time.) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

...and can I fly an ensign with the flag of Saint George in the quadrant as opposed to the Union Flag?

(I know I can fly what I like, but is it legal)

Don't think it actually repealled the right to fly the Scottish ensign although I am sure someone will come up with chapter and verse where it did.

If sailing up in God's country, you will see many boats flying the Scottish Red Ensign. It is also handy when visiting ROI /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for that. The hawaii connection comes back to me now.

Still too many Jocks in government patronisingly telling us what to do and think though.

Consider yourselves lucky it's not the Englanders in government (making up the numbers?) telling you - then you would really be in the cack! If you did do and think what you are told, how much better life would be for all.

Why do you want the Flag of St. George to be such a small part of your proposed ensign?

[/ QUOTE ]

I have a 2yard St. George falg and would like to fly that ... occasionally out here on the river I give it a haul out .....

If and when you gain your independence we will take them back , along with all other BRITISH Government departments such as the Army, Navy and Air Force along with all their kit. You can look after yourselves after that, and don't come crying to us for help when you are attacked by whomsoever.

I think you will find that when a French Customs Officer issues a fine to you for not flying what they consider to be the correct UK ensign, that quoting ancient maritime acts and reference books on the subject in your defence will not cut the mustard.

Trying to debate the case on the basis of naval history and Scottish independence seems a bit pointless to me. As if we don't we have enough problems at the moment with different sectors of the community in the UK refusing to integrate with the majority on equal terms !
