I am not a regular contributor to this forum although I follow the threads from time to time but I am astounded at the patronising arrogance and sheer bad manners of some. Only today we see a thread <time to stir things up> no doubt started to rub people up the wrong way. I have no idea what the thread is about but it was apparently successful in upsetting quite a few people. For those on the fringes of the forum such as myself it takes away the pleasure of participating in exchanges which could be informative or entertaining for example the thread <mounds of anchor chain>.

I suppose this jekyll & hyde phenomenon is to some extent unavoidable in a forum such as this but in my opinion the extreme bad tempers and manners can push people away and that would be a pity.

I think you should view this forum as a bit of a pub. It's mostly a group of "mates" trying to wind each other up, occassionally intersperesed with useful titbits.
Like all pubs - its got its fair share of "characters" - showing all kinds of prejudice and almost always they are a bit "Dolaly Tat", but rise above it - a pinch of salt goes a long way.

Everyone has their pet hate / subject / rant

Unfortunately this particular subject has some strong feeling. Many remember the pleas he made on the forum and Kim - Forum Moderator - had to lock the thread to stop posts on it etc.
Many people have views about the whole affair that cross many borders - good and bad. I am not saying I am right - in fact I don't know enough to be really factual about it - like many we are led to the water by others information and media editorial.

Take it easy - enjoy the forums as they are a wealth of info. and downright banter at times .....

Yes there are bad words at times - but we all 'kiss and make up' .......

Must admit that I enjoy watching (but not participating) in the occasional "scrap". Just like school really, the quickest way to get the whole school into the smallest possible are was to call "FIGHT"

We all still have that school kid in us (I hope)

Do agree that people can often take the wrong or exagerated meaning. I put this down to the rather impersonal way of communicating; no smiles, winks etc that might show that a comment is intended to betongue in cheek (though emoticons are an attempt to overcome this).

The secret is to get involved in the ones where you are comfortable/interested/have something to say- and stay away from the ones that upset/irritate/annoy you.
As someone else said - its a bit like Pub conversations.

The owner of MV Picton was on here a while back and I think he got up peoples noses (a lot) He would ask a slanted, hypothetic question without giving any real details, then get all "holier-than-thou" when peoples answers didn't go along with his way of thinking.

There were genuine posts offerering advise based on the scant details he did give out.
Questions such as
"What would you do if you were in a "safe" UK marina and your boat fell over?"

How are you supposed to answer that? When people asked him for more information, he got very indignant.

I do not wish to pass judgement on either subjects or people but I think you will find that ‘Scuttlebutt’ does have a ‘shelf life’ for most people.

Most threads advertise the negatives when there are many positives available.

It will wear you down in the end.

I think that the PBO Forum though is a beautiful thing . Enormously helpful and mostly based on actual experience. It can also give you a lift if you can help someone else.

I hope it lasts for a very long time.

I think you're correct Col.

Most regulars who've tried to follow the story have reached their conclusions long ago. I'm intuitively in favour of the little guy fighting the faceless corporation. I never met the family but we have mutual friends. All brand new marinas welcome live-aboards. They welcome anybody. A few years later when the yuppy flats and the pontoons are all full they take a very different attitude. Verbal contracts "you can stay here as long as you like" aren't worth the paper they're written on.

As the affair dragged on I reached the conclusion that the Shalom family had a pretty weak hand and were playing it very poorly. At one point a five-figure ex-gratia payment to leave was within their grasp and they rejected it. That's my take on the situation: Many will disagree but we've all been round the argument so often that nobody is shifting their position.

Afraid I cant agree with you here. Rereading Vincents original post seems to me entirely reasonable and fair. I too had been following the thread "Time to stir things up" and personaly cringed at some of the personal attacks that appeared.

If Vincent is innocent (catchy line there) then he might be understandably offended by your implications.

Then again I may be just getting suckered here;-)
