I have received a very keen quote for insurance from DRL Marine Services. They sent me a proposal form from Northernreef Insurance Co. who would appear to be registered in Montevideo, but I am unable to trace them on the internet. Does anybody have experience of dealing with DRL and how have they been? Has anybody heard of Northernreef??

I am presently with Pantaenius but their premium is now ridiculous as I am based in the Med. Any suggestions of reasonable insurance would be welcome.

There is a reef on the north side of Loch Melfort, I wonder if its this one.
The lady at Pantaenius put things in perspective for me a while back. My Boat insurance and my car insurance premiums are around a similar cost. The car is worth about £2k on a good day to a blind dealer whereas the boat is worth a fair bit more.
It helped.

try Peter Clements 'clements@mcis.u-net.com'
based West Mersea Essex, a very serious sailer
he has just arranged my renewal with Haven Knox Johnson.
its about £125 cheaper than Pantaenius but i have heard of problems with them, although the have been fantastic when i have claimed. Pantaenius premium about .84 % but just introduced a " new for old" clause & this made the premium just not worth it.
send me PM

Try St Margarets, they offered me the Premium Policy which covers an area from Baltic to just north of Madera and was cheaper than most other companies, the cheapest was Saga but they were so long getting back to me that I gave up, possibly a hint of what it would be like after a claim

DRL have been fine with me. I have the policy and all looks good.

It is certainly a bit strange that Northern Reef do not appear to have a web presence - but not totally strange, as insurance companies are a last reactionary bastion of luddism generally.

I'm happy with the policy, the small print and the price. Of course, the only person who is really qualified to comment is someone who has made a claim.

I am with St Margarets and have been for last 15 years - no complaints . I looked at the Saga policy and was very unhappy with the small print.

IMHO that's a bollocks answer! Insurance is all about risk. Very rarely is a boat a total loss. Most of the time its about accidental damage or theft. The cost of repairing a dent in a third party will be the same whether its put there by a manky auld boat or a nice shiny new one. Cost of replacing an outboard will be the same whatever rail it was nicked from.

heard about northern reef insurance?? here is a warning from the FSA

"I would strongly advise against buying any sort of policy from Northern Reef. This company does exist. It is incorporated in St Vincent and the Grenadines (although it is not authorised there) but the last we heard it was operating illegally from the Costa del Sol. It is a one man band run by Clive Lewis. We do not know what financial resources this company has, because it is not authorised here and we do not regulate it. We would rather not comment on the company's willingness to pay claims, but Clive Lewis' last company (Excelsior General of Cyprus) left a trail of unpaid claims as did the one before that (Great Western of Belgium). I really couldn't give a monkeys if you think its a bollocks answer. The sweet pretty young thing with the dulcet tones who whispered those pearls into my shell like made it a most pleasureable experience so if she'd said my premiums were vast in order to fund her lavish lifestyle - I'd be very glad to pay.

Could it be that the ageing roue has yet again been deceived by an ugly old Jo Brand lookalike with a nimble tongue?

Who are you calling a roulade?
Anyway - she told me she looked as good as she sounded and I for one believe her.
She was pretty impressed with me and said she'd always had a thing for tall men.

Thanks for that snippet.
I wonder if Darren Lewis of DRL Marine has any connection with the aforementioned Clive Lewis, alledgedly of Northernreef, Excelsior General and Great Western Insurance Companies???

Re: Northernreef Insurance

My policy says the company is registered in Montevideo, with addresses in Nassau and Gibralter.

So where does the Costa Del Sol come into it? Where is the illegal bit?

The only thing that ties in is that DRL Marine is run by a Darrel Lewis - a brother?
