Even if you do get insurance with say £100 excess, when you have a prang the insurers loss adjuster will choose the cheapest repair. I got caught this way couple of years ago when the forestay fitting damaged the mast. Repair offered on tall lightweight rig was to slap on a heavy doubling plate 7/8 of the way up the mast with no offer of recalculating changed CG, CB etc Arguing this point cost me also all the sailing season with no compensation either.
Why not have a very high excess say £5,000 and keep the difference in premiums in a separate sink account - and go carefully for the first season!

You and me both - I've tried more than a dozen - including specialist race boat insurers, and have failed spectacularly so far.

Yachtsure might be possibles, Noble also, but they told me their race boat book was closed for the time being. I'm about to start looking round European insurers, and may see if there is a way of getting cover from USA - all this is a bit extreme. We're no more radical than Full Pelt, WIld Oats ..

Try craftinsure.com We have been with them for a while. Can't comment on their claims department as we haven't had to try it out - but the premiums have been very competitive. The guys who run it are sailors so they are nice to talk/e-mail to.

First of all good luck with your 'New' boat,

For what it is worth I have always insured with Bishop Skinner. Insuring a 28ft cruiser cost me £182 with 20% NCD last year. This year with a 25% NCD it is £184. Racing will always cost more it would seem, but give them a call.

What you have to remember is that all the brokers in the back of the mags' will be placing the business with the same underwriters, mine is with AXA. How much you pay will depend on how much commission they slap on.

As far as claims are concerned, we have had one, a rope very badly round the prop four years ago, if the engine had stalled the bill would have been much lower! the support given by the broker was excellent, we were able to choose repairer and no corners were cut.

Good luck....

Your best sail is the next one.

Try Nautical Insurance Services in Southend, been with N&G through them for 6 years and very good service. Processed a claim very efficiently. They advertise in the back of most of the mags.

Their claims department is first rate. A dredger damaged my boat and sank/damaged several others last summer. Their surveyor turned up within a few days and they settled the invoice from my repairers within a week or so. Owners of some of the other boats are still waiting for their insurers to settle.

Craftinsure offered to deal with the third party on my behalf and settled my claim in full very quickly - repairs, lost fenders warps etc.

They are still waiting for settlement from the third party - and I didn't lose my excess.
