Help ! Just got a bill for renewal from Pantaenius, nearly double last year. I was told the company will no longer insure wooden boats older than 1970 and I should count myself lucky because mine is 1969. Seems ridiculous to me, because repairs on a wooden boat built in 1990 must be just as expensive as one built in 1890. Anyway, even with a £1000 excess the new premium for my £29,000 ketch is nearly £700. Grateful for any sensible solutions.

Have you asked St Margaret's? My boat is older, although grp, not wood, and they seem happy to take my money at the same rate each year.

My boat is worth 200 grand and is wood launched in 1971, I'm awaiting renewal with pantaenius, I dread to think what my premium will be! Maybe time to move on to another company. I'll check out Saga!

Try K C Powell & Partners Ltd. Leigh-on-sea. Phone 01702 470035.
They are boating people and will know what you are talking about. They are the insurers for the Macwesters Association. Policy underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance.
Hope this helps. Let us know who you end up with will you please?

I know in a different part of the world, but insurance is an international market and most here is reinsured offshore. Have you got brokers over there who can make a better informed assessment of your risk. We have cover for everything (including racing) except international voyages (remembering that those mean at least 1,200 nm of serious sea from here and mostly many times that, not a nip across the channel) - assuming you are not covered for Atlantic crossings, etc then you are paying, on a percentage of cover basis, approximately 5 times what we pay for a 1996 professionally built custom steel boat. Like you, and perhaps also like a knowledgable broker who is trusted by an insurer, I do not really see what "old" has got to do with it if the boat is known to be well maintained.

St Margarets won\'t insure me

I've been trying to get a quote on a 40 y.o. motor boat, ex rnli. They used to insure my last boat, (1944 wood 65 tons), but they don't want to quote. The only difference was that I declared my intention to occasionally use it single handed, (no big deal in a motor boat).

Funny thing is I've also had refusals from people I haven't asked!! So now I wonder who was just a conduit for someone else and who to chase for a reply.

Paul -- Powell's quote is £487 with a much smaller excess, the best so far. I'm still working on it but this is the one I'm likely to go for. Huge thanks!

Update after 3 weeks

I followed all the suggestions here -- thanks to all posters!! -- and got a lot of quotes. Saga wouldn't insure me, perhaps because I had two claims in two years (boat hit on mooring while unattended). The highest quote was £850. The best was £354 from Bristol Channel Marine in Cardiff whose underwriters were Haven Knox Johnston. Excess £250. This price was £80 less than I paid last year.
